Why Summer Can Be Hard for Youth in Foster Care
While summer is often seen as a season of fun, freedom, and family vacations, it can be one of the most challenging times of the year for youth in foster care.
Without the structure of school, many young people lose access to daily support systems, trusted adults, meals, and routines that help them feel safe and connected. Summer can also highlight feelings of loneliness as they watch peers spend time with family, attend camps, or create memories they may not have the same opportunities to experience.
For youth in care, summer can mean:
š Increased feelings of isolation
š Disrupted routines and stability
š Limited access to supportive services
š Anxiety about placement changes or the future
š Missing out on activities due to financial barriers
As a community, we can make a difference. Whether it's becoming a foster parent, mentoring a young person, supporting local foster care organizations, or simply raising awareness, every act of support helps youth feel seen, valued, and included.
This summer, let's remember that every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, belong, and make lasting memories.
