ICYMI: Ayanna Brown (Forest Park, IL resident and founding member of Forest Park Against Racism) along with her esteemed colleagues Jamal Cooks, Kimberly N. Parker, and Tonya B. Perry hosted a panel discussion this week titled, "Literacies as Freedom Tickets: Black Caucus Scholars Reflect on the Texts That Set Them Free." This event was in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and Penguin Random House as their inaugural Juneteenth event. Illinois Juneteenth Committee and thank Governor JB Pritzker, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, State Senator Kimberly A. Lightford, State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch , the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. Mayor Rory Hoskins - Forest Park and other advocates throughout the state for making Juneteenth a state holiday in Illinois! Illinois is leading the nation in creating and promoting inclusivity and equity for ALL Illinoisans.

And in national news...The US Senate unanimously passes a bill making Juneteenth a national holiday. We are one step closer!!!!

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
