From Doug Palmer, our musical entertainment at the Cancer Survivor Reunion--a very special song and fundraising opportunity for Relay For Life.
Most of us know someone or have a close association with someone that has had to deal with cancer. This monster is everywhere and anyone at any moment regardless of age or gender can be diagnosed with it.
Today, I presented a new song for Relay For Life that attempts to capture the many feelings and emotions that care givers go through while caring for someone they love so dearly. The song is a rewrite of a love song that I wrote many years ago. I felt so compelled to change up the words and to breathe new life into this beautiful song and reuse it to raise funds for cancer research.
My goal was to capture the essence of the relationship between a person going through a cancer journey and the primary care giver. Others will need to comment on whether I succeeded at my attempt or not.
I got pretty choked up trying to sing it during a Survivors Celebration tonight. It was all I could do to keep my composure and perhaps the most heart felt and emotional delivery that I have ever done.
Perhaps when you hear it you will understand why.
Here are those words:
1.) We heard the news, shocked and so confused
Why did this have to be?
Denied and mad, frightened and sad. A new reality
So hard to hear, draw me closer Dear. I’ll be here by your side
We will see this through, grace of God will do,
To comfort and to guide.
CHORUS
You give me love, I’ll give you what you need
We are the best of friends, You’re everything to me
I wonder now and then, about our days ahead
Is this a dream? How will this journey end?
I’ll give you my love, I’ll give you what you need
Anything for you. You mean so much to me
I want our love, to last for all eternity
2.) I reflect on better days, so grateful what we share
Determined now, see this through somehow
He helped us to prepare
And I can’t wait, to celebrate, Little vict’ries day by day
He gave you to me, so that all will see,
What love was meant to be.
