NICODA-New International Center of Diverse Artists

NICODA-New International Center of Diverse Artists How We Are Connected is NICODA's six year performing arts response to National Geographic's THE GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT.

NICODA is The New International Center of Diverse Artists, an innovative performing arts organization with a social mission rooted in the belief that cultures should speak to each other. How We Are Connected is a multi-disciplinary piece that encompasses theatre, music, dance, multi-media and science, performed by a group of artists who represent a variety of backgrounds. The provocative idea is '

the science', whereby the artists (like the subjects of The Genographic Project) take an actual DNA test that becomes the impetus for the collaboration and directly influence the creative process and the production. Each year, How We Are Connected focuses different regions of the world. The opening year is 2012:
The Caribbean
Africa
Asia
Europe
North & South America
Year Six is a Culmination and Look-Back Year

NICODA is The New International Center of Diverse Artists, an innovative performing arts organization with a mission rooted in the belief that cultures should speak with each other.

NICODA's leading program, HOW WE ARE CONNECTED, excites artistic collaborations between cultures and fosters diversity in the arts. Its programming goals ensure that diverse ethnicities participate in performance opportunities together.

NICODA continues to probe the questions we all ask: “Who am I?” "Who Are You?" and "How Are We Connected?" And what of the whole human family? Most people grow up thinking they know their family history, but often that only goes back a few generations. In the last few decades, many people have undertaken genealogical research and many family histories have been expanded and reclaimed, but eventually, we hit a wall where we have no more family stories, no more records of our ancestors. Can we trace back our lineages to the very first people? Thanks to the work of Dr. Spencer Wells and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC's GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT's collaboration with NICODA, we further the quest for that answer.

In our next installment of panel discussions and an original theatrical performance scheduled for 2018, we look at the lineage of a single individual and his specific ancestral journey. Stay connected for information about the premier of this new and exciting program that moves the question forward and pushes the boundaries of cultural identity.

Check out our review in the Carib News! How We Are Connected is "a skillful interweaving of dramatic performance, song and dance to show very intimately how these men and women, their families, and even a few historical figures, have struggled over the years with questions of identity and belonging...cast members transport us to their ancestral homes through remembrance and song, and they allow us to experience some of the political and personal back story of the region. We get to sample its music, its food, its spiritual traditions, its bloody history of struggle and oppression, as well as the uplifting narrative of the generations who persevered and overcame those struggles, whether while remaining there, or by finding a new home here in the US."

The cultural connections within National Geographic's The Geno-graphic Project is explored through theater, dance, music, multimedia and science in a dramatic production titled How We Are Connected.
