Tough as it is to imagine right now, there will come a time when the final whistle blows on this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The athletes will depart, and the crowds will go home. But according to FIFA, that should not mean the end of the excitement around the sport.

FIFA’s World Cup Legacy Program for host cities picks up where the games leave off and involves the expectation that local organizations will create lasting social, economic, and environmental benefits beyond the tournament.

It all started with Little League, when baseball aficionados introduced sports to kids by standardizing fields that were built to be the right size for them.

Of course, plenty of other sports have followed since then. Field hockey, for example, has Game On Hockey (GO HOCKEY), with fields measuring 30 yards long by 25 yards wide. (Goals are eight feet wide.) USA Field Hockey notes the format was designed to allow children to “learn basic game concepts in a stage and age-appropriate setting.”
