Glover another Founding father of Nigeria.

Brief History of the Nigerian Army which dates back to 1863 when Lt. Glover of the British armed forces selected 18 indigenes from the Northern part of what is now Nigeria and organised them into a local force, called the “Glover Hausas”.

This local force was used by Glover during his rule as the governor of Lagos to carry out punishment, intimidatiom and savage expeditions on the Yoruba people of the Lagos hinterland. Glover Hausas were also used to protect British trade routes around Lagos.

In 1865, the “Glover Hausas” became a regular force and were renamed the “Hausa Constabulary”. They performed both police and military duties for the colonial government They were later again renamed the ‘Lagos Constabulary.”

At the same time there was a Northern force that became known as the West African Frontier Force, its history is as part as a slave raiding army. This force in the 1890s came under the control of Frederick Lugard.

The Glover Hausas whose name was changed to the Hausa Constabulary then the Lagos Constabulary were then incorporated into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF).

In 1901, the Colonials changed the name again and the Glover Hausas having merged with the West African Frontier Force became known as “Lagos Battalion.”

In addition the Royal Niger Company had its own force known as the Royal Niger Constabulary Force. As the owner of the Royal Niger Company having bought it from Goldie the British government had the Royal Niger Company (RNC), Constabulary Force in Northern Nigeria in 1886.

The new unit expanded by absorbing the Northern Nigeria-based elements of the Royal Niger Company (RNC) Constabulary. By the end of 1901, it had incorporated all paramilitary units in the other British dependencies in West Africa into its command, thus earning the name “WAFF.”

The establishment of West African Frontier Force (WAFF) led to the merger of all units into a regiment in each of the dependencies. The merger in Nigeria produced the northern Nigerian Regiment and Southern Nigerian Regiment.

The First commanders of the Southern Regiments of WAFF were Lt CHP Carter (1899-1901) and Col J Wilcox (1900-1909) respectively. The two regiments were later used for expeditions during the annexation of Nigeria by Lugard between 1901 and 1903.

With the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, the unification of the northern and Southern Regiments came into being and this witnessed the birth of the Nigerian Regiments. The Northern Nigerian Regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Nigerian Regiment, while the Southern Nigerian Regiment became the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Nigerian Regiments (NR).

The mounted infantry of the Northern Regiments became the ordinary Infantry Battalion after the Second World War. A field artillery also existed in the Northern Regiment.

With the visit of Queen Elizabeth of Britain between 28 January and 15 February, 1956, the Nigerian regiment was renamed the Queens Own Nigerian Regiments (QONR).

Also in the same year, the regionalisation of the WAFF came into existence and each military force became independent of the other. As a result, the QONR became the Nigerian Military Force (NMF). By 1st June, 1958, the British Army Council in London relinquished control of NMF to the Nigerian Government.

In 1960, when Nigeria became independent, the NMF became known as Royal Nigerian Army (RNA). When Nigeria became a republic, the RNA changed to the Nigerian Army. In the same year, the Army changed its uniform, rank structure and instruments from those of RWAFF to new ones including green khaki uniform.

If you read back to the start, you will see that what you call a Nigerian Army is made up of 3 parts, Glover Hausas, Royal Niger Company Constabulary Force and the West Africa Frontier Force. All have their roots in Arewaland, Northern Nigeria, all set up to protect the interests of colonial bandits with punishment, savagery and death as deemed necessary.

Congratulations to those happy Nigerians, nothing has changed, even your army is not yours. Glover, Goldie and Lugard must be smiling in their grave.

Appreciating the Ancestors

A Yoruba pursuing a postgrad in Europe messaged me to appreciate me for my posts. He then narrated an ignorance that put him in shame:

He rented a self-con attached to the house of An old (white) couple in the outskirt, not far from his university. This is not unusual, because renting price is usually outrageous in city centres. This couple regularly go to a cemetery to where their parents were buried.

So, during a recent holiday, the children and grandchildren of the couple visited. They all decided to visit the cemetery. they made cakes, and other foodstuffs; they had some spade, shovels, etc. The Yoruba neighbour saw them and since its holiday, he volunteered to join them. They all drove to the cemetery, a huge space with thousands of well kept tombs/graveyards. (Those of you who live or have been abroad would understand how such place usually look like).

Our Yoruba helped in pruning the mini garden flowers on the family grave yards. Cakes and drinks were shared. Then, each member of the family paid homage to the spirits of the ancestors, speaking to them and appealing for peace, and other needs. My Yoruba brother was stunned that Oyinbo are speaking to the dead. They even introduced and showed a new-born baby to the ancestors.

Later, the Yoruba curiously asked why they spoke to the dead. "Because they are not dead. They continue to dwell in with us, watching over us. Most people do that here. The cemetery is like another city." Then somebody asked our Yoruba brother how his family does that back at home; our guy said they don't do ancestral worship. They asked him why?

Then our brother wore his Nigerian spirit of ignorance. Because it is bad and idolatry. Then they asked, "why did you call it bad". the Nigerian man said, "our people used to do such in the olden days. But after colonisation, we abandoned the bad habit." Then somebody helped him rephrased his statement. "So you stopped connecting with your ancestors because some strangers told you it was bad?". "Yes!", our Nigerian brother answered. And then the whole house burst out into a loud laughter.

They talked more and then the discussions ended there. The next morning, a seven-yr-old grandchild of the host family knocked his door. When he opened. the boy showed him a the picture of a sky-scraper and say, "Hey look, I just jumped down from that building." Our Nigerian guy smiled and said, "that is not possible. I don't believe you." The boy said, yes, it is not true; I was just testing you, since you always believe everything without questioning."😂😂😂😂😂😂.

You and I know that in that part of the world, you can't scold a child for making fun of you. our brother has become an object of ridicule in front of a child. You see, if you choose not to wake up, unlearn and relearn, you'll continue to disgrace yourself in a world where common sense reigns, unlike Nigeria. Our brother is now planning a reconnection with his Yoruba heritage.

The pain is not about whether you should/shouldn't connect with your heritage. It is about self knowledge and common sense. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.

"If we have Yoruba men as president & IGP, then a Yoruba man as governor of Oyo & they can't protect the interest of Yorubas, then we have a serious leadership lacuna in Yorubaland.

It's time to start holding our leaders accountable, especially in Oyo, where it's now a thing."

Stop confusing yourselves or allow yourself to be confused!

Know these simple things about YOUR CULTURE!!!!

Don't be deceived into self-hating.

1. IFÁ - A Divine, Coded, Scriptural knowledge with Chapters and Verses known as Odùs. It is a guidance for mankind to take him through life and it talks about every single subject under the sun; the things that have happened thousands of years ago and those things which will happen tomorrow.

EVERYTHING is mentioned in the IFÁ corpus including Medicine, Religion, Philosophy, Art, Mysticism, Mathematics etc

The Odùs of IFÁ come in multiples of 16 and enquiries to its revelations obtain by an arithmetic combination of binary outputs.

It is the voice of Olódùmarè, the SUPREME and PROFOUNDLY UNSEARCHABLE GOD ALMIGHTY

It has NEVER been known to fail.

It is ALWAYS CORRECT.

2. AWO - It is a body of knowledge which is kept secret to those to whom the knowledge is revealed.

It is also a CULT because it is opened to only a few people who are initiated into it and who keep a measure of secrecy about it.

It is kept secret because our ancestors in their wisdom thought it best to keep this knowledge within a small loop as the best way to preserve it.

Thinking about it todsy , they were right as on all counts.

The people within this loop, those who are privileged to share in this knowledge are called "AWO"

AWO thus describes a BODY of knowledge, a CULT of people and the PEOPLE with such knowledge who belong to that cult.

3. ALÁWO/ONÍFÁ - They are DEVOTEES who WORSHIP in accordance with the traditional ways of our ancestors.

They are not necessarily or automatically members of AWO or have such knowledge of it.

They are a congregation, the ones you now call adherents of African Traditional Religions [ ATR ]

They sit in worship and listen to the Priests.

In the course of that worship and also with age, the congregation grow in knowledge, wisdom and spirit, and gradually they can move up to assume responsibilities of Elders, or Priesthood if they so desired or were chosen.

3. BABALAWO - It is from the word BABA and ALÁWO.

Bàbá is FATHER/ELDER

Aláwo is a DEVOTEE.

It simply means a member of the congregation who has grown in knowledge, wisdom and spirituality of IFÁ.

He is not necessarily an old man but the wisdom grows with age.

A young man of 21years old can be gifted with such knowledge through quick learning and therefore become an Elder even over men who are older than his father.

BABALÁWO is a PRIEST OF IFÁ.

He is NORMALLY supposed or expected to have learnt all the matters of IFÁ corpus.

He knows all the ODÙS [ Chapters and Verses] of IFÁ and he has committed everything to memory.

It takes a very long time to achieve this and he is constantly learning.

He is DEDICATED to IFÁ and normally isn't expected to be engaged in any other job but strictly IFÁ worship.

He is always there to consult IFÁ for people who needs guidance and he assists them with understanding the messages from IFÁ.

The Babaláwos are not interested in earthly vanities, always contented and are very often poor in material things.

But they were never hungry.

They just couldn't be bothered about MONEY.

They live on the little FREE- WILL gifts from people of the community.

4. That is the way things were in the time of sanity.

It was so in the time of our ancestors.

It was so even in our time, not too long ago.

It is a very orderly system.

Babaláwos are not the evil men who go about to destroy people as so often depicted in your attrocious Nollywood home videos.

Babaláwo is the one depicted in Tunde Kelani's Thunderbolt, acted by Chief Adebayo Faleti.

They are a people who simply belief and have faith in and dedicated to a different order of knowledge.

Babaláwos DON'T evengelise.

They DON'T come to invite you to learn wisdom or know about their system of beliefs.

It is infact a TABOO for a Babaláwo to call a man who had visited for consultations the day before and asking him "How far?"

5. But the world has turned upside down now.

We have learnt new things.

Babaláwos have been watching Televangelists on TV preaching PROSPERITY.

The people have been glued to Mount Zion films of Mike Bamiloye and their minds twisted, they are brainwashed to see Babaláwos as great evil men, his films are designed for you see where the Babaláwos are depicted as dirty, lousy and wicked souls who will rot in hell.

We now have men who managed to steal a few Odùs from somewhere and he will go about acting as Babaláwos, mesmerizing ignorant and desperate people with oratory of Yoruba poetry.

We now have quacks in the system.

Babaláwos now do SIGNBOARDS TO ADVERTISE!!!!

Babaláwos now want to be rich. Many of them concentrate on the sections of IFÁ which deal with mysticism and voodooism and they use the knowledge to do magical things.

They use it to do rituals for MONEY.

Babaláwos now live in Mansions and spend their lives thinking of making more money.

Their business with IFÁ is just for them to make money.

Many Babaláwos have now become like Pastorpreneurs and Uztaz confusing and deceiving people, using the ancient wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors under cover of Christian bible and Muslim Qur'an.

The same Bible and Qu'ran were themselves plagiarized from the IFÁ corpus.

IT IS A FACT.

You can argue that with your Pastors and Imams.

It is now you will understand why our ancestors were so reluctant to share THAT KNOWLEDGE in the first place.

They knew that it may become difficult to regulate people and the negative use that they could deploy the knowledge.

It is the reason our Elders had A CULT TO PROTECT THAT BODY OF KNOWLEDGE.

Now, the few Elders we have left are very scared to share more knowledge with our generation; one by one they are departing with so much of that knowledge without leaving it behind or transferring it to the next generation.

We don't know yet that we have been ATTACKED in Yoruba land.

There is a serious problem!!!!

Most people don't know this.

When much of medieval Europe was producing relatively simple religious sculptures, artists in Ile-Ife were creating astonishingly realistic bronze and terracotta masterpieces.

When Europeans first saw them, some refused to believe Africans had made them.

They were wrong.

The artworks were created by Yoruba artists centuries before colonialism.

History is often not what we were taught.

What other historical myths should we challenge?
