On July 27, 2020, our Marine League Detachment had the honor of hosting a group of motorcycle veterans who rode from the state of Oregon on a three (3) week trip to conclude at Arlington National Cemetery and stopping in several states along the way to pay tribute to the families of America's fallen heroes. Our Marine Corp League Detachment “Chris S. Ebert Detachment 1221”, located in Forest City, North Carolina was named in honor of Cpl. Chris S. Ebert, United States Marine Corps, who was killed in Iraq in 2004 and whose twin brother Brian also a Marine is one of our members.
The Tribute to Fallen Soldiers, Memorial Torch Motorcycle Ride members arrived on their motorcycles with three (3) large American Flags attached to the bikes waving in the wind. Their coach pulled up bearing a big sign on the side that read "Tribute to Fallen Soldiers, A Run To Arlington National Cemetery". They also had the Forever Flame Wagon which is pulled behind the coach with them on every trip. This group makes a trip each summer to honor the fallen. This year a Gold Star Mother from Oregon lite the flame in honor of her Airman son killed in action. The flame will remain lit until they extinguish the flame after the ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on August 2, 2020, after all, sixty-seven (67) names of the fallen are read and the bell is rung for each.
The ceremony was opened by our Commandant with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and a prayer. The National Anthem and Amazing Grace was performed by a wonderful group on recordings before Executive Director Warren Williamson explained to the attendees why these veterans ride across the country to present their mission and honor to the fallen families. Mr. Williamson presented Brian and his Dad plaques and patches from the "Tribute To Fallen Soldiers" organization. They are now brothers of the organization.
After a very impressive and moving ceremony sandwiches and refreshments were served and a time for fellowship was shared by all. Prior to their departure we all gathered outside one more time and executed a “Hand Salute” as both Chris’s Dad and Brian rang the bell on the “Forever Flame Wagon”.
Their next stop was Fort Bragg where they spent the night before heading to Arlington National Cemetery the next day for their ceremony on August 2nd.
