The Drug Enforcement Administration is advising the public of an alarming emerging trend of colorful fentanyl available across the United States. In August 2022, DEA and our law enforcement partners began seizing brightly-colored fentanyl and fentanyl pills in 18 states. Dubbed “rainbow fentanyl” in the media, this trend appears to be a new method used by drug cartels to sell highly addictive and potentially deadly fentanyl made to look like candy to children and young people.

OPIOID OVERDOSE INCREASE
Suspected Opioid Activity Alert
July 27, 20222

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and Fond du Lac County Health Department are issuing a
public health alert due to an increase in suspected opioid drug overdose activity in Fond du Lac County from July
17 to July 23, 2022.
DHS identified 3 reports of suspected opioid drug overdoses seen at hospital emergency departments. This is a
greater number of opioid drug overdoses than would otherwise be expected within a seven-day period based on
Fond du Lac County’s recent opioid overdose activity.
Fond du Lac County Health Department issues this alert to increase community awareness and advise first
responders, healthcare professionals, and people who use drugs and their families of the increased risk for
overdose in our community. Currently, it is unknown as to what is driving this recent change in activity. Potential
factors that may increase the risk of overdose include: a change in the composition of illicit street drugs (including
a mixture of opiates, fentanyl, carfentanil, and other synthetics), use after a period of sobriety, increased use due
to stress or trauma, or mixing substances.
This alert should serve as a notice to:
 Recognize the signs of an overdose:
o Pale, sweaty or clammy skin
o Lips or fingertips turn blue
o Slow or irregular breathing: gasping, gurgling, or snoring
o Difficult or unable to wake
 Always call 911 if you suspect someone is overdosing
 Avoid using street drugs alone; keep an eye out for your friends/family. Call someone you trust or the Never
Use Alone hotline at 800-484-3731
 Carry Narcan (naloxone) and be prepared to use multiple doses when necessary
 Contact 211 for treatment and recovery resources
