This is amazing!

It's official: raised more than $1 million this year for the Veterans & Children Foundation, pushing forward and dedicating the ride to fallen American Legion Riders Department of Kansas member Michael Haas.
The American Legion Department of Texas was the top donor on Tuesday, delivering more than $116,000. This year, 14 American Legion departments donated more than $20,000.
Amazing work everyone. And to all those still here in Louisville, please be safe heading home.

This week, while many are headed to National Convention, the nation mourns the loss of one of the American Legion’s “Good Guy Award” Winners, Dolly Parton.

The James V. Day Good Guy Award is named after a World War II veteran and prominent Legionnaire, and is presented to individuals who show a commitment to their community, state and nation.

In 2004, at The American Legion's 86th National Convention in Nashville, Dolly was presented the James V. Day “Good Guy” Award by The American Legion Past Department Commanders Club.

The award, named in honor of World War II veteran and prominent Legionnaire James V. Day, recognizes individuals who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to their community, state and nation.

Dolly certainly embodied those ideals.

Her patriotism and support for America's military community were only one part of a lifetime devoted to others. Through her philanthropy, support of children's literacy and countless acts of generosity, Dolly used her success to make life better for other people.

Below is a photograph preserved in The American Legion's historical archives of National Commander John A. Brieden III with Dolly Parton at the James V. Day Good Guy Award reception during the 2004 National Convention.

Today, as Legion Family Members, we can remember Dolly not only for the songs and laughter she gave generations of Americans, but also as someone our own organization once recognized for the way she lived her life in service to others.

Some other notable recent recipients include former Miss. America Heather French Henry, Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster and Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Uecker, Boxer and philanthropist George Foreman. former MLB player Rick Monday, former NBA star and U.S. Naval Academy graduate David Robinson, and Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan "Bud" Selig.

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. May he rest in peace.

“We’re going to remember his name. His beautiful smile. His goofy antics. And we’re going to continue this mission in his name. Because that’s who we are.”
