The most recognized Irish symbol in the world came from a tiny fishing village on the edge of Galway Bay.

The Claddagh was an ancient fishing community that sat just outside the walls of Galway city for centuries β€” technically separate from the city itself, governed by its own elected king, operating by its own customs and traditions. Its residents spoke Irish, fished the bay, and largely kept to themselves.

The Claddagh ring β€” featuring two hands holding a crowned heart β€” originated in this community. The hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty. The way the ring is worn carries its own language: on the right hand with the heart facing outward means the wearer is open to love. Turned inward means their heart is taken. On the left hand it signifies engagement or marriage.

The rings were passed from mother to daughter for generations within the Claddagh community. They were symbols of belonging as much as of love β€” a way of saying you knew where you came from and you carried it with you.

The original Claddagh village was demolished in the 1930s to make way for new housing. The community that had existed there for centuries was dispersed.
But the ring traveled further than any of them could have imagined.
