Although only 19 percent of the US population resides in rural areas, these locations remain underserved with fewer physicians and specialists per capita than urban areas.

A recent study found that in 2022, at least 7.4% of emergency departments across the U.S. did not have an attending physician on-site 24/7 and more than 90% were in low-volume or critical access hospitals -- a federal designation for small, rural hospitals.

Some doctors and the groups that represent them say physicians’ extensive training leads to better emergency care, and that some hospitals are trying to save money by not hiring them. They support new laws in Indiana, Virginia, and South Carolina that require physicians to be on-site 24/7.
