On June 15, 1889, a locomotive transporting gravel from the city of Folsom to Sacramento derailed 6 miles west of Folsom. The train was operated by the Sacramento and Placerville Railroad Company and the gravel was intended to be used for filling in around the new switch yards in Sacramento.
The brakeman, Robert A. Wilson, aboard the locomotive was killed and four others were injured. The wreck, which occurred early in the morning, was already cleared and the track was repaired by 2:00pm that afternoon.
