PROGRAMS

1. PROMOTING ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

KAPANY seeks to promote Korean parents’ active participation in the public school systems by educating parents about the public school systems and procedures in the system.

KAPANY will
(1) Host workshops on the NYC public school system;
(2) Publish and distribute brochures in Korean providing important information;
(3) Build a website to provide Korean parents with important information;
(4) Issue press releases and host press conferences to utilize Korean news media; and
(5) Launch campaigns to help Korean American parent’s community.

2. BUILDING SOUND RELATIONSHIPS AMONG STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND SCHOOLS

KAPANY seeks to build sound relationships among students, parents, teachers and school officials by promoting mutual understanding of cultural and linguistic differences between Korea and the United States.

KAPANY will
(1) Host Korean traditional “Teacher’s Day” events every May.
(2) Host Korean cultural events for non-Korean students, parents, and teachers;
(3) Actively participate in cultural events in public schools;
(4) Send Korean and non-Korean students to Korea to provide them with a chance to experience
Korean culture;
(5) Promote Korean cultural classes to public schools;
(6) Award scholarships; and
(7) Host Korean writing and/or speech contest.

3. ADVOCATING PARENTS’ AND STUDENTS’ RIGHTS

KAPANY actively advocates Korean students’ and parents’ rights by
(1) Hosting “Know your rights in public schools” workshop;
(2) Running “Korean Parents Hot-line”;
(3) Publishing and distributing brochures about problem solving procedures in public schools;
(4) Providing Korean parents with face-to-face, one-to-one counseling on schooling; and
(5) Referring distressed parents to appropriate legal or medical professionals.
