On the eve of July 4th., I am reminiscing why I came over to America 40-years ago with my thirteen-month old son, Mohammad Salman Hamdani.
In search of economic prosperity.
In search of freedom to live my life according to my wishes.
In search of happiness & joy.
In search of The American Dream.
We had to work hard, extremely hard.
My husband , Saleem worked in a junkyard for 5 years under the hot & freezing skies, opening car parts.
I worked in a warehouse for 5 years, stocking merchandise, making boxes, picking orders on the line and packing to ship the orders.
I gave birth to Adnaan & Zeshan on US soil.
We bought a small mom-pop store in Brooklyn in 1985. We worked hard from 6:30 AM to Midnight , 24/7.
My boys attended St. Cecilia’s parochial School.
We bought our first home in 1989 in Bayside, Queens.
We had, through hard work, accomplished The American Dream.
I took my teaching license in 1993 and started teaching in the BOENYC.
Then, on September 11, 2001, OUR LIVES CHANGED.
Salman, my son, First Responder & NYPD Cadet , responded to his call of duty and gave the ultimate sacrifice .
The rest is history. You may google him and myself to learn my ordeal , the ordeal of a mother who lost her son but sadly had to face prejudice , discrimination , suspicion and xenophobia because of my Muslim faith . My husband died of broken heart in July 2004. The street where we lived, 35th. Ave & 204 st. I had it dedicated in his name : Salman Hamdani Way.
A scholarship Award is also established at his & my alma mater, Queens College.
Fast forward to 2019. I Have a 4- year old grand son, Zamasn, 3-year old granddaughter Salma & 4- month old Emma. I am happy & life is comfortable.
It is time to give back to the nation that has given me so much.
My life is now dedicated to social justice and serving my community.
I am honored to be running for Councilwoman in the Town of Brookhaven. This land has provided me and my family with sustenance, has given prosperity , dignity & respect .
It is the
GREATEST NATION IN THE WORLD!
The Land of the Free & the Home of the Brave. Land of Immigrants.
E PLURIBUS UNUM.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
