Update on Flushing Hometown Heroes Banners 🇺🇸
We wanted to provide a clear update on the Hometown Heroes banner program.
First, thank you to everyone who participated. The response from our community has been incredible, and we’re honored to recognize so many local service members.
We know there has been significant anticipation—and some understandable frustration—about the banners not being up by Memorial Day. That was our goal as well. However, a few realities impacted the timeline:
Submissions continued to come in later than expected, and we made the choice to include as many honorees as possible rather than turn people away
As a fully volunteer-run organization, processing a much larger program than anticipated added complexity
Ordering and production timelines were extended due to the overall volume
Where things stand now:All banners have been ordered, and we are currently waiting for them to arrive. Once they are delivered, installation will begin immediately, and we’ll share updates as that process begins.
We share the community’s excitement to see these displayed. Every decision made was with the goal of honoring more individuals and doing so thoughtfully and correctly.
We appreciate the continued support and look forward to celebrating the heroes represented by these banners very soon.
Thank you for supporting the Flushing Area Historical Society

This summer, something a little different is happening across Genesee County.
It’s called the America 250 Passport Program—and it turns visiting places like the Flushing Area Historical Society into part of a larger experience.
Here’s how it works:
📍 Visit participating locations across the county
đź“– Get your passbook stamped at each stop
🏆 Collect enough stamps and earn rewards
There are over a dozen locations involved—including museums, historic sites, and community spaces—and Flushing is part of it.
But here’s the real question:
👉 How many places around Genesee County have you never actually stepped inside?
This is a chance to change that.
📅 The program runs through September 30, so there’s plenty of time to explore.
đź’¬ Are you planning to try it?
📍 And how many stops do you think you could hit?

We’ll be part of this program here in Flushing — so if you’re working on your passport, make sure to stop in and get your stamp.

This was taken in downtown Flushing… but there’s a lot about it that isn’t immediately obvious.
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary scene from long ago—but look closer.
The storefront…
The way the animal is displayed…
And especially the ribbon—something you don’t often see in photographs like this.
We know this was taken somewhere downtown, but the exact location isn’t clear.
Photos like this give a glimpse into how different everyday life and business once were here in Flushing—things that would look unusual to us now were simply part of the normal rhythm of town life.
📍 Does anyone recognize the building or location?
🎗️ Any idea what the ribbon might have been for?
đź’¬ Have you heard family stories about businesses like this?
Your memories and knowledge help connect these images to real places and people—and help keep Flushing’s story alive.

A Piece of Flushing’s Story Comes Down
Today marks the end of a familiar chapter in Flushing’s landscape.
For decades, the “smiley” water tower stood as a recognizable and beloved landmark—something that made people smile, sparked conversations, and became part of our shared identity. In this time-lapse video, you’ll see the moment its frame is carefully removed, bringing that era to a close.
While the structure itself is coming down, the memories it created—and the place it holds in our community’s story—remain.
That’s where you come in.
We’d love to hear your stories. Do you have a memory of the water tower? A photo over the years? Maybe a moment tied to Waterworks Park or that unmistakable “smiley” view?
Please share your memories and photos in the comments or message them to us. Together, we can preserve this piece of Flushing’s history for future generations.
Take a moment to watch, reflect, and remember—and help us tell the full story.
Special things to Beth Roman president of Parks and Recreation for this video.
