So the question is, “What is education?”Is it learning the skills to make life better for everyone? Is it having examples of diversity to tear down the walls of prejudice? Is it learning that all people have skills and talents to share that make life better for everyone? This post was sent to me by someone who obviously has no personal experience with a “drag queen“ but only knows the term by inference, by stereotype, by fear, and by prejudice. One of the most educational experiences I have had as an adult gay man is learning the wonderful, joyous, liberating, and educational richness of celebrating life through the eyes of a drag queen! I say, “Hallelujah for compassion, hallelujah for diversity by example, hallelujah for safe spaces in our public schools, hallelujah for drag queens!” There are indeed age-appropriate drag queens just as they are age-appropriate books that should be available in all of our public libraries. This is not a sell out to prurient interest. This is a buy in for the future of a compassionate and truly democratic society.
