Did you know that today, Feb 28, is Rare Disease Day?!

There are approximately 7,000 different types of rare diseases. You're probably asking what makes a disease rare?! Well, that’s a good question... The answer is when a disease affects less than 200,000 people.

There are aprox 100,000 people world wide living with CF, so cystic fibrosis is considered a rare disease. CF really is a fascinating disease and what's even more interesting or what really makes us rare is how it affects us. There really are no two CF patients a like... we really are ALL one of a kind!

The most important thing I think anyone can do that is affected directly or indirectly by a rare disease is help raise awareness for it.

Research for rare diseases is almost always underfunded, and there are huge roadblocks in access to care. More than 50% of those affected by rare diseases are children. We need to start making these rare diseases known so that cures can be found for ALL of them.

Excellent tips for anyone with a vulnerable friend or family member!

In the past, I was hesitant to voice my needs to my friends and family -- especially when it came to germs during flu and cold season. But as I've gotten older, I've realized that these five requests can help make this time of year a whole lot easier.

For people with cystic fibrosis, the flu can cause a worsening of symptoms and lead to a faster decline in lung function. A flu vaccine can reduce your risk of getting the flu by helping the body fight off or increase its immunity to the flu virus.

Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every year because flu viruses are always changing. The vaccine can’t prevent all types of the flu virus, but it’s the best way to reduce the risk of getting sick during the current flu season. Learn more: https://on.cff.org/4fL7NvY

We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to any of our CF patients and families. We are devastated that we are unable to help our community at this time.

The charity is experiencing a severe lack of funding - this has never happened in all our years of community service here at Kid Logistics, but it has gotten harder and harder to access funding in the years since the pandemic.

Kid Logistics will reopen applications as soon as we are able to secure access to stable sources of funding.

If we have already received your completed application, it will be processed.

Our CF Sibling program is supported by a separate grant dedicated solely to that project. If you would like a Journal Kit for your CF child's sibling(s), please let us know. The kits are ideal for teen and tween siblings of CF children.

*LOCAL YOUTH ORGANIZATION WORKS WITH KID LOGISTICS CHARITY TO PROVIDE MEALS TO FAMILIES OF HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN IN JACKSON*
Event date: Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Cadets from the Madison Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol assisted the Kid Logistics charity in providing hot meals to the families of in-patient children at the UMMC Children’s Hospital. The first of what is hoped will become a series of dinners were donated to the families of patients and staff on the 5th Floor today. Meals were delivered by the Hal & Mal’s restaurant catering service.

“At the suggestion of the hospital, we decided to provide our first family dinner to the 5th floor because it’s where the Cystic Fibrosis patients stay when they are in the hospital. We feel that, when you have been siting by your child’s bedside for a week or more, having someone bring you a delicious hot meal would be a small reprieve from running to grab a quick bite whenever you can.” - K.O.

We hope, with the success of this first family meal night, to get the community involved in providing dinners to the other wards and floors of the UMMC Children’s Hospital in the future
