On World Teachers’ Day, we are especially grateful for the many Mississippi educators who have welcomed us into their classrooms to help students learn about organ and tissue donation.

These conversations fit naturally into:

• Biology and Anatomy & Physiology
• Health and Health Sciences
• Pre-Health, Allied Health, and Nursing
• CTE and HOSA programs
• Driver Education
• Family and Consumer Sciences

Our goal is to provide accurate information, answer questions, and help students make informed decisions based on facts rather than myths or misconceptions.

Once the conversation begins, students often realize how close donation is to home. They may know a transplant recipient, donor family, living donor, someone waiting for a transplant, or someone whose life was changed by donated tissue. Some students may even be organ or tissue recipients themselves.

Thank you to the teachers who make space for these important conversations.

In 2026, 1,485 Hispanic/Latino donors have already given the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Behind every number is a person, a family, and a legacy that continues through the lives of others.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the generosity of Hispanic/Latino donors and donor families whose selfless gifts bring hope, healing, and second chances to people and communities across the country.

Their impact reaches far beyond a single gift. It lives on in every life saved, every family given more time, and every story made possible through donation.

Kidney disease affects far more people than many realize, and for some, it eventually leads to the need for a lifesaving transplant.

86% of people on the national organ transplant waiting list are waiting for a kidney. The average wait for a kidney from a deceased donor is 3 to 5 years.

Research like this can help improve how kidney disease is understood, prevented, and treated, while living kidney donation can offer some patients another path to transplant.

Scientists are studying how genes affect kidney disease. Whether or not you've been diagnosed, you help researchers crack the code that can improve the ability to treat or prevent kidney disease.

Breast reconstruction after cancer can sometimes include tissue made possible by human donors. Donated skin tissue can be processed into a matrix surgeons use to support reconstruction after mastectomy. This is just one of MANY ways that donor heroes help heal others through tissue donation.

A donor’s gift doesn’t end with the transplant. It gives someone the opportunity to keep living, loving, and making memories. 💙 💚

"Every breath I take is a reminder: this life is a gift, meant to be lived fully, with gratitude, and with purpose."

At 19, Brianna was diagnosed with severe lung disease and was 26 when she received her lifesaving gift of new lungs from her donor, Katie. At the time of her transplant, she was in her junior year of nursing school. Brianna reflects that Katie and her family not only gave her new lungs, but a future – a year after her transplant, she graduated as a registered nurse and began working at the very hospital that saved her life, Johns Hopkins Medicine.
