The Flower Mound

The Flower Mound The Flower Mound Foundation preserves the original character of The Flower Mound prairie remnant. The Mound has never had a plow in it.

The Flower Mound is a 12.576-acre native tallgrass prairie segment of the Grand Prairie. Nineteenth century settlers named this landmark The Flower Mound for the profusion of wildflowers that grow there. It is located at 2400 Flower Mound Road, Flower Mound, Texas, on the northeast corner of FM3040 and FM2499. Long time Flower Mound resident Otto Consolvo dedicated himself to preserving The Flower

Mound from property development. On July 25, 1983, Consolvo and a group of determined citizens succeeded in purchasing the site and placing it into a permanent land conservancy under the care of The Flower Mound Foundation. On January 11, 1984, The Texas State Historical Commission approved The Flower Mound as a State of Texas Historic Site. The Mound sits on Long Prairie, which was a one mile wide by four mile long prairie amidst the Cross Timbers Forest. Early travelers emerged from fighting their way through the thick brush of the Cross Timbers onto Long Prairie, with The Mound rising above. Many weary travelers rested at, camped on, and surveyed the landscape from The Mound. The Mound exists today as it did when the pioneers first saw it. The same bluestem, Indiangrass, switchgrass and wildflowers grow there as they did hundreds of years ago, when buffalo and antelope grazed them. It is one of the last remaining pieces of unaltered prairie.

It was a truly glorious morning as we celebrated Christ's resurrection with around 1,000 of our neighbors at the Easter Sunrise Service on The Flower Mound. The sunrise was stunning, and the service, officiated this year by Trinity Presbyterian, was inspirational. Thanks to Trinity Presbyterian Church , the Summit Club of Flower Mound for coffee, the Women of Flower Mound for the doughnuts, and all who came together on this beautiful (if a little chilly) Easter morning.

The Easter Sunrise Service on The Mound will be held on Easter Sunday, April 5, beginning at 6:45 am. We suggest arriving between 6:00-6:15 am to allow for time to park and make your way to the top. Women of Flower Mound and Summit Club will be handing out coffee and doughnuts as you arrive. Trinity Presbyterian will be the celebrant this year.

Remember that The Flower Mound is a native prairie, so we suggest you save your Easter Sunday best for later in the day and instead wear long pants and close-toed shoes to the service. Note that The Mound was burned about a month ago, and although it has rained and it’s greening up, some ash may remain. Feel free to bring chairs or blankets to sit on.

Have you driven by The Flower Mound lately? It's a lovely shade of green all over the Mound just a couple of weeks post-burn. But if you walked on it right after the burn you might have noticed that it wasn't completely black but had a sort of "patchy" appearance. This type of burn is perfect for protecting the tiniest of creatures, the microscopic life that ensures the health of the prairie's grasses and wildflowers. Standing clumps of grass provide shelter for rabbits and birds that call the Mound home. It's all part of the mosaic of life that is a living prairie.
