Saint Louis County Landmarks

Joseph Hyatt House, 2625 Shackelford Rd., near Florissant, c. 1860

This Greek Revival house stands on part of what was once the 180-acre farm of Joseph L. Hyatt acquired from his father, Frederick Hyatt, in 1860.

The property was part of the St. Ferdinand Common that was set aside by the Spanish colonial government for homestead farms. It was divided in the French style into long, narrow fields running northwest from Coldwater Creek to the Missouri River. Residents of Florissant were granted these farms.

Frederick Hyatt acquired about 360 acres here and was one of the more colorful early figures in St. Louis County. He was married five times, twice to members of the neighboring Hume family. After his death, the property was divided between his two sons, James S. and Joseph L.

Joseph Lafayette Hyatt was born in 1824 and married twice. He married his first wife, Martha Elizabeth Cason (1826- 1850), on September 20, 1849, and he married his second wife, Elizabeth Harris (1832-1893), on June 10, 1858. Joseph lived on this property until his death in 1896 at which time the farm was divided by his surviving children. Joseph is buried in Cold Water Cemetery alongside his wives.
