CHAPTER PATRIOT

John Clark was originally a British soldier, captured by the Spanish navy and was a POW in Havana Cuba for 19 months. After his rescue he was again ordered into British service, deserting the navy by jumping ship in the Charleston Harbor. He eventually became an American patriot and afterward served as a Methodist then Baptist minister for the settlements along Cold Water Creek w

here the Patterson and Manion families had settled. Clark is believed to be the first Protestant to preach in the Florissant Valley. He died in 1833 at the age of 75, while faithfully ministering to area families. Though the earliest church building did not survive, a monument to Reverend John Clark remembers his contribution to the development of the community. It is found on the grounds of Cold Water Cemetery, which is owned and maintained by the Missouri DAR.
