Serving the Underserved

The purpose of Renewed Spirits is to provide equine assisted therapy to underserved clients including Veterans, at-risk youth and those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The staff at Serenity Counseling provides Equine-Assisted Therapy at a free or reduced rate for those populations that typically do not have access to such counseling services. Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a unique modality for addressing a wide range of therapeutic needs. Through interactions with our horses, clients metaphorically discover and explore relationship patterns and issues in their lives. The equine-client relationship provides opportunities to develop skills of communication, responsibility, healthy relationships, and healing. Equine therapy can be used with individuals, family or group counseling sessions.

The staff is trained in the EAGALA model therapeutic model, which is a team approach that includes a licensed, credentialed Mental Health Professional, and a qualified Equine Specialist, and horses working together with the client at all times. When inside the arena, all the work is done on the ground with the horses front and center, deliberately unhindered and never ridden, and allowed to interact with the client as they wish.

This creates the space for the client, with the support of the professional facilitators, to reflect, project, and make deep connections. A horse does not care if you have dropped out of school, been in jail or have an addiction. They only care about what you exhibit in the moment. Horses are incapable of lying, cheating and manipulating. This alone sets a good example to clients because they soon realize that it is counterproductive to cheat, manipulate or lie while engaged in activities with the horses. The horses provide an unconditional, non-judgmental and honest platform that is fundamental to healing the soul.
