Francis Marion University's Fred R. Sheheen Non-Profit Leadership Institute The Fred R. Sheheen Non-Profit Leadership Institute at Francis Marion University Bruce and Lee Foundation provided initial funding.

In 2002, FMU President Fred Carter and the late Fred Sheheen were instrumental in founding the Non-Profit Leadership Institute, and the Drs. The NPLI is now sponsored by the Darla Moore Foundation, and sessions are held at The Continuum in Lake City. In 2017, the NPLI at Francis Marion University was named in honor of Sheheen, who passed away the previous year. In addition to having been a public

service advocate, a champion of education, and a long-time university friend, Sheheen served as director of NPLI for many years and provided invaluable guidance for the Institute's growth and longevity. NPLI alumni represent nearly all of South Carolina's 46 counties.
