Great news - All sites had low levels of bacteria last week!

Here's a glimpse into our beautiful morning of sampling on Tuesday, April 20th! We had a wonderful view of Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve at our northernmost sampling site.

We need your help!

📱 Please take a couple of minutes TODAY to call your State Representative and ask them to make sure House Bill 2617 (which would ban polystyrene foam foodware beginning Jan 1, 2023) gets scheduled for a hearing by Friday!

Check out this week’s results! Our volunteers sampled 8 beaches for enterococcus bacteria, and all results came back clean except 1, which had high bacteria levels. Visit bwtf.surfrider.org/explore/10 for details.

Raise your hand if you frequently see polystyrene foam on Oregon beaches 🙋‍♀

Florence already passed a similar ordinance prohibiting polystyrene in food service (as have several other cities in Oreogn), and now it’s time for our state legislature to act.

Globally, 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the marine environment every year, devastating the world’s oceans. Plastic does not go away, instead it breaks up into smaller pieces that can be mistaken for food by marine life, often with dire consequences.

We are so excited to announce we have restarted our monthly water quality monitoring after a long hiatus due to the pandemic. This month's results show low bacteria at all of our sites 🥳

HEALTH ADVISORY ISSUED FOR HECETA BEACH.

The Oregon Health Authority issued a public health advisory today for higher than normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Heceta Beach in Lane County.

People should avoid direct contact with the water in this area until the advisory is lifted. Higher than normal levels of f***l bacteria can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. This applies especially to children and the elderly, who may be more vulnerable to illness from waterborne bacteria.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀. 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲? If so, you are invited to volunteer with the CPMR Ambassador Program where you will learn and share about marine species that visit and live in the Cape Perpetua Area with visitors.
