Our hearts ache as we learn of the crash of Ranger 56. In moments like these, words are never enough to capture the depth and range of emotions we feel.

The aviation rescue community in Arizona is small and tightly knit. It is made up of dedicated professionals and volunteers who are willing to go anywhere, at any time, on a moment’s notice to help those in need. DPS Ranger flys both law enforcement and rescue missions, a true testament to their skill, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the people of Arizona.

PCSO has a very close relationship with DPS Ranger. They have assisted us on countless missions—transporting our personnel into the field, extracting our teams safely, and even helping with the evacuation of injured PCSO members. They are more than partners; they are our brothers and sisters.

On Sunday night, Nov 24 at 7:07 PM, the PCSO Search and Rescue Posse was dispatched to assist three teenage hikers on the Hieroglyphic Trail who were without a light source and unable to safely continue. Teams located the hikers in an area too hazardous to hike out. They were provided with headlamps and warm jackets, and a helicopter was deployed to hoist both the hikers and team members to safety.

We want to remind hikers to be prepared for the unexpected by carrying essentials such as a light source with spare batteries, a portable phone charger, extra clothing layers, water, snacks, basic first-aid items, an emergency blanket, and a whistle. Downloading offline maps or having a reliable navigation method is also recommended. With earlier sunsets and dropping temperatures, proper preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable hike.
