Students in the Siuslaw Region are part of our shared community. They are our neighbors’ kids, our classmates, and the young people growing up alongside us.

When families here face housing instability or sudden financial stress, students feel it right away. School becomes harder. Stability slips. And often, the systems meant to help cannot move fast enough to meet what is happening.

Our students cannot wait.

Safe Shelter for Siuslaw Students exists so someone is ready in those moments. With flexible, unrestricted community support, we can respond quickly and with care. This support helps families stabilize, prevents homelessness, and keeps students connected to school and the routines that help them feel safe.

This fund is always open because the needs of our community do not follow a schedule.

It’s here! Back-to-school time means it’s time to register, and Safe Shelter For Siuslaw Students is back with our annual Clothing Swap & Giveaway.

Florence – Siuslaw Middle School Gym
August 13 and 14, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mapleton – Mapleton Middle/High School
August 19, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
August 20, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bring gently used clothing to share, or just come pick out what you need. Free for all students in the Siuslaw area including public, homeschool, and online learners.

Back-to-School Clothing Swap & Giveaway Set for Florence and Mapleton

FLORENCE, OR, August 2025 – Safe Shelter for Siuslaw Students will host its annual Back-to-School Clothing Swap & Giveaway, providing free clothing for local students before the new school year begins.

The event is open to all students in the Siuslaw area, including public, homeschool, and online learners. Participants may bring gently used clothing to exchange or simply choose items they need. No donation is required.

Dates and locations:

Siuslaw Middle School Gym – August 13 and 14, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Mapleton Middle/High School – August 19, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and August 20, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“Our goal is to make sure every student starts the year with what they need to feel comfortable and confident,” said Jennifer Ledbetter, Associate Director of Safe Shelter for Siuslaw Students. “When families don’t have to worry about clothing, they can focus on helping their kids succeed in school.”

Safe Shelter for Siuslaw Students is a nonprofit serving the Siuslaw region. Its mission is to mitigate the effects of homelessness and poverty to support school success by providing temporary shelter, support services, and community awareness.
