Happy Wacky Tree Wednesday!

This week on Tree ID Tuesday, we have a small, shrubby species that generally only reaches between 10-20 ft in height. This species is dioecious and produces small edible berries in the fall that are a great source of food for wildlife.

The flowers of this species are small, white, and bell-shaped and come on racemes. The bark of this species is shredded and can present with browns, grays, and oranges mixed.

Great to see strong APSAF representation at the National SAF Convention!

We had three award winners out of Virginia. Joh Seiler received the Barrington Moore Memorial Award, John Munsell received the Carl Alwin Schenck Award, and Jen Gagnon received the Technology Transfer Award. Congratulations to all three for their immense contributions to the society and profession!

Tony Doster of North Carolina was also recognized with the Presidential Field Forester award for District 8!

Noelle Arena served as Convention Program Chair, and Asija Rice contributed as a panelist for Plenary I. Congratulations to both for representing APSAF and contributing to a successful event!

This week's species can be found throughout much of the APSAF region and is most commonly found in the piedmont and mountains, thriving in bottomlands, riverbanks, and floodplains. It grows up to 80 feet tall with a wide, spreading crown. The leaves are oppositely arranged, are deeply lobed with pointed and jagged edges, and have a silvery-white underside. The seeds mature in late spring and can grow up to 3 inches long (some of the largest in North America!).

This week on Forest Floor Friday, we're checking out a bizarre-looking herbaceous perennial species found in damp mountain and piedmont woodlands in the Carolinas and Virginia. This species grows 1 to 2 feet tall out of the leaf litter and stays below the canopy until fall, when it displays its strange fruits.

To help you ID this one, check out its fruiting stalk and foliage. The leaves are sharply serrated, and an upright stalk holds white berries, each with a dark purple-to-black center dot. The berries sit on a thick, red-to-magenta stalk, giving the cluster an uncanny look like doll eyeballs staring up at you from the ground.

For today's , we're looking at a small native tree or multi-stemmed understory species found along stream banks and in rich upland woodlands across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. While it is famous for its fragrant white blossoms in the spring, its twisting branches and glossy foliage make it easy to spot in early fall.

This species is a tough and adaptable grower that rarely reaches more than 20 to 30 feet tall.

To help you ID this tree, look closely at the branching structure and foliage. The low-branching twisted stems split near the ground, transitioning from furrowed bark at the base to smooth, pale gray branches dotted with lichens. The leaves are also arranged oppositely along the twigs, with entire leaf margins and bright, light-green veins.
