11 Years Free—A Testament to God’s Grace

April 2 marks 11 years since I was released from prison and embarked on a new chapter in my life. I never envisioned the journey that lay ahead, including becoming a Justice Ambassador, advocating for those who have shared similar experiences, and even presenting my testimony to lawmakers at the Capitol.

Over the past two years, I have worked as a juvenile detention officer, mentoring young men at a critical crossroads. I have also had the privilege of volunteering within prisons, providing guidance and support to those still incarcerated. Every step of this journey has been about giving back, as I am deeply aware that personal transformation is possible.

Throughout this journey, God’s grace has been my constant guide. This is not merely my story; it serves as a testament to the reality of redemption, the significance of second chances, and the understanding that one’s past does not dictate their future.

To anyone striving for a better future, I urge you to persevere. Your purpose transcends your past.

Confirmation in a Thank you Card:

There’s a powerful lesson in the story of a farmer who once found a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon. Wanting to help, he gently cut open the cocoon to release the butterfly. But without the challenge of breaking free on its own, the butterfly’s wings were too weak to fly, and it quickly died.

In many ways, the struggles that incarcerated individuals face are like that butterfly in the cocoon. The journey through hardship, reflection, and resilience can be painful, but it’s that very struggle that builds strength and wings capable of taking flight. The path to change and redemption is hard, and true transformation can’t be rushed or handed over; it has to be earned through the process.

As we support those in prison, let’s remember that our role isn’t to cut open the cocoon, but to encourage and empower from the outside, nurturing growth until their wings are ready. Transformation takes time, but when it’s real and hard-earned, it’s a beautiful sight to behold.

After the service, the men gave me a thank-you card with butterflies on it. We’re all in a process, building wings that can one day carry us forward.
