Backyard Buffer Program Now Open!

EDIT: As of 3/13/26 this year's program is full. Those who have requested trees will receive an email with pickup information once staff knows when trees will arrive from the nursery. If you missed out this time please check back in February 2027 for next year!

Landowners with a stream, pond, ditch, wet area or other waterway on their property may request a free packet of bare root seedlings to plant on their property. This year's species are swamp white oak, red maple, American plum, river birch and hazelnut and each packet will contain 25 trees (5 of each species). Reservations for this year will be accepted until March 13 or when the program reaches capacity. Trees will be available for pickup in early to mid-April. Exact pickup details TBD depending on when trees arrive from the nursery. Those who have requested trees will be contacted in late March or early April with pickup information.

This early March wildfire in Allegany County started when numerous slash piles from a private timber harvest ignited, prompting Maryland Forest Service responders to call-in a bulldozer to quickly contain the blaze's spread. Utilizing heavy equipment greatly reduced the amount of time, water, and effort it would have taken to extinguish the large slash piles. Firefighters from the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department - many of whom were dressed for their annual banquet that evening - came to aid the efforts and were still able to make their special event. We greatly appreciate and respect our volunteers' willingness to selflessly serve the community, so we aim to assist them as much as possible in return.
