Flint McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park OnThisDate - On this day in 1885, the disassembled Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor aboard a French Navy frigate. "Shipped from France in 214 crates, the monument was broken down into 350 individual copper and iron pieces. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the centennial of the American Revolution and the abolition of slavery. Because the pedestal on Bedloe's Island was not yet finished, the giant "puzzle" remained in storage for months while American fundraisers, notably publisher Joseph Pulitzer, secured the money needed to complete the structure. The famous monument was officially reassembled and dedicated the following year on October 28, 1886." (Postal Museum/Smithsonian Open Access image)

The Friends of Flint McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to Swartz Creek Fellowship Lodge #236 (aka "The Brotherhood of Flags”) for their generous pledge "...to become the perpetual steward and benefactor of the park's American Flag and the flags of our Armed Services." In the words of Todd Lamb, the lodge's Worshipful Master who presided over yesterday’s Flag Day observance at the Lodge, "The flags that fly over McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park are not merely pieces of cloth. They are powerful symbols of sacrifice, duty, courage, and service." The FMVP is eternally thankful to Lodge #236 for their pledge of support. 🇺🇸

McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park OnThisDate June 14 - Today is "Flag Day", observed annually on June 14th to commemorate the Continental Congress's official adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the United States flag in 1777. "On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating the flag would consist of thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, is known as the 'Father of Flag Day' after he first had his students celebrate the flag's 'birthday' in 1885 and advocated for a national holiday. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day in 1916, and President Harry Truman signed the Act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day in 1949."

Before you donate to a veteran nonprofit, take a few minutes to do your research.

Unfortunately, not every organization that claims to support veterans is legitimate. Across Genesee County and surrounding communities, there have been reports of donation collection boxes that may not directly benefit veterans or may be operated by organizations with questionable practices.

Before donating money, clothing, or household items, consider:
✅ Verifying that the organization is a registered nonprofit.
✅ Reviewing how donations are used and what percentage directly supports veterans.
✅ Looking for transparency in their programs, services, and financial reporting.
✅ Donating to trusted local organizations that have a proven track record of serving veterans in our community.

Your generosity can make a real difference in the lives of those who served, but taking a moment to research where your donation goes helps ensure your support reaches the veterans who need it most.

If you have questions about veteran resources or reputable organizations serving veterans in Genesee County, contact Genesee County Department of Veterans Services. Together, we can help ensure donations truly support those who have sacrificed for our nation.

McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park OnThisDate June 2 - On this day in 1865 Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith formally surrendered the Trans-Mississippi Department in Galveston, Texas, marking the final surrender of a major Confederate field force and the effective end of the American Civil War. "As commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department, Smith held out after Lee and Johnston, signing terms aboard the U.S.S. Fort Jackson. Smith was the last Confederate general to surrender a major army, essentially closing the war's armed resistance. To avoid arrest for treason, Smith fled to Mexico and later Cuba, before returning to the U.S. in November 1865 to take an oath of amnesty." (National Portrait Gallery/Smithsonian Open Access image)

McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park OnThisDate June 1 - On this day in 1812 President James Madison sent a formal message to Congress outlining grievances against Great Britain, strongly urging them to consider a declaration of war. "This address highlighted British impressment of American sailors, violation of maritime rights, and support for Native American hostilities. Madison argued that Britain’s conduct amounted to a state of war against the United States. He cited the seizing of American ships, the disruption of trade, and the "wanton destruction" of American property. Following this message, Congress debated the measure, leading to a declaration of war on June 18, 1812." (National Portrait Gallery/Smithsonian Open Access image)

McFarlan Veterans Memorial Park OnThisDate May 27 - On this day in 1941, the German battleship Bismarck was sunk in the North Atlantic following a massive pursuit by the British Royal Navy. "Crippled by a torpedo strike on May 26 that jammed her rudder, Bismarck was pounded by British battleships King George V and Rodney for hours, leading to her scuttling and sinking with over 2,000 casualties. At 08:47, British ships opened fire, quickly silencing Bismarck's guns and turning the ship into a burning wreck. Following severe damage and fire, the crew set scuttling charges to sink the ship, which went under that morning. The destruction of Germany's most powerful battleship marked the end of the first major Atlantic sortie and highlighted the rising importance of air power in naval warfare."
