During this year’s 2026 “City Nature Challenge” on the iNaturalist app, more than 106,000 people across 754 cities worldwide uploaded observations to iNaturalist over a single weekend in April. Those observations included species never before recorded on the platform, critically endangered species, and even a plant with only 13 known records in the global biodiversity database!

This method of community science is a modern way to contribute to large datasets through incredibly easy measures, such as simply uploading photos. These observations become real data used by researchers, land managers, conservation organizations, and others working to better understand species distributions and ecosystems.

Not every observation will be a rare species or first record, but each one helps clarify a bigger picture. This is the same intent behind the MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz, now coming up on year 2. We need your help bringing more attention and documentation to the aquatic invasive species near you!

We’ll also be hosting a short informational webinar on June 9th @ 11am with Jo and Erick for anyone interested in joining this fun and easy summer project. Zoom registration here: https://msu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hWFyR6bwTPmAZxMDBA_YIw #/

The May Mid-Month MiRead is here! This month’s pick, suggested by Dearborn Heights Library, is Pandora's Locks by Jeff Alexander.

This engaging read explores how invasive species dramatically reshaped the Great Lakes and their ecosystems. It’s a compelling look at how humans, ecology, and water quality are deeply connected. Let us know if you check it out! 🙂
