This Months Artifact Spotlight:

“The Scottish Chiefs, a Romance,” is a novel written by Jane Porter. This particular copy was published in 1815 and split between 4 volumes. These small books originally belonged to Chauncy S. Payne, Maria Stockton’s brother-in-law. His initials were stamped into all 4 covers and interior pages, alongside his signature. At some point in time the books were passed down to Maria and Thomas Stockton’s grandson, Thomas F. Stockton. They were added to his private library as seen by the pasted label in the photograph. This wonderful piece of the family’s history is held within our collection and viewable upon request.
