Nebraska Supreme Court weighs felon voting law: How it could affect 2024 election

Nebraska restored the right to vote to felons 19 years ago, now the attorney general and secretary of state say that law is unconstitutional.

With roughly 12,000 - 15,000 people in jails across Michigan that lack access to the electoral process; it is important to not only etch out accessibility to an election for this demographic but also provide the needed education. Fair Voting Alliance, with the support of several voting advocacy groups has organized a candidate forum for the U.S. Senate and 8th Congressional seats at the Genesee County Jail on July 11th. It is paramount that candidate information is shared broadly to support the education of voters. This is also important for voters who reside in jails in Michigan as non-sentenced detainees who can vote through an absentee ballot process from jail.

The candidate forum doesn’t reflect an endorsement from FAIR Voting Alliance, the Genesee County Jail, any department or entity of the county, or any of the advocacy groups; it reflects the commitment to responsibly educate and inform voters detained in jail and all voters on the people, legislation, proposals, and information on a ballot.

Amyre Nisi from CBS Detroit did a perfect job in highlighting the mental health activity hosted by Taylor Made Re-Entry for Mental Health Awareness Day at the Genesee County Jail. Applause to Dee Dee Taylor for her commitment, resolve, and resilience in all of what she does for our jailed community and people returning back to the community after jail and prison. Great job by Dee Dee and all of the thanks for the partnership with Fair Voting Alliance and our founder/executive director Percy Glover. Thank you to all of the partners and organizations that supported this wonderful event! The article and video says it all!!!!!

Dee Dee Taylor, the sister of Breonna Taylor, is on a mission to help bring people out in a much better state of mind.

The right to vote provides citizens the power to elect leaders of their choice and hold elected leaders accountable. The constitutional right to vote is also afforded to pre trial and non sentenced residents of jails across Michigan. This image reflects Mr. Callaway voting in yesterday’s City of Flint 9th Ward City Council Election. The courage and acceptance of not letting the current situation define the responsibility of the individual duty is remarkable. Kudos to Mr. Callaway in stepping into his civic commitment from the Genesee County Jail (Flint, Michigan). Kudos to our Founder/Executive Director Percy Glover for leading the charge of this work; as well as the other jailed residents who engaged in today’s election.

The responsibility in creating educational platforms are critical for empowering voters. The lack of familiarity with candidates who are campaigning becomes destructive to the electoral process. To combat this, Fair Voting Alliance,
and the Genesee County Ambassadors have organized one of many Meet the Candidates Forum for the 2024 election year for the population of non-sentenced eligible voters who currently reside at the Genesee County Jail. Thank you to all of the partners/suuporting agencies that encourage and commit to this really important work: I.G.N.I.T.E., VAAC - Voting Access for All, Voters Not Politicians, Nation Outside, ACLU of Michigan, Black Voters Matter Fund,
Jews for a Secular Democracy, and Michigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network.

A critical piece in GOTV efforts is educating the community on who and what is on the ballot. The Black Wall Street of Muskegon did just that in yesterday’s non-partisan candidate forum for Muskegon Heights City Council Candidate Forum. A well organized event by Lashae Simmons II that was moderated by Judge Gregory Pittman and sponsored by Voters Not Politicians provided community members accesssibility and understanding of each candidate; the Muskegon Heights community were able to listen and pose questions to each candidate so that an informed vote can be made on the May 7th election. Lack of familiarity of candidates in elections create a struggle for voters when accessing a ballot. Great job and presentation by Lyndon DeFoe and Allison on the recent changes in the election process.

February 27, 2024, we made history!

With Michigan as an early voting state for the presidential primaries, we had to ensure EVERYONE had the opportunity to exercise their right to vote!

Yes! Those currently detained in Michigan jails who have not been sentenced, can register to vote and participate in the electoral process via absentee ballot.

Did you know this was possible?
