Flint Technical High School was created in 1939 as a trade and vocational education school for students from across the city. With just 400 students it was the smallest high school in Flint, but one that enjoyed incredible loyalty from its students. This photo captures a protest downtown when it was announced Tech would be closing. Alas, the students were not successful and the school was shuttered in 1959. Located on Hamilton at North Saginaw, Dort Elementary was built on the site.

The winner of the Flint event will go on to represent Southeast Michigan at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio this July.

The grounds produced three All-American Soap Box Derby National Champions in a six-year period between 1978 and 1983.

“The Moving Wall,” a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, will be back in Flint from July 30 to August 4, 2026. It has been to Flint four times before, all proudly hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 175 Genesee County (VVA 175).
