Dear Breastfeeding Supporters,

GREAT NEWS!! Michigan Senate Bill (SB) 351 passed the Senate Health Policy Committee with bipartisan support from Chairman Kevin Hertel (D-12), Majority Vice Chairwoman Silvia Santana (D-02), Senator Erika Geiss (D-1), Senator Veronica Klinefelt (D-11), Senator John Cherry (D-27), Senator Paul Wojno (D-10), and Senator Mark Huizenga (R-30).

We are so thankful to Senator Jeff Irwin (D-15) for introducing this bill, as well as the advocates and breastfeeding supporters across Michigan who have called, emailed, and met with their Michigan Senators to ensure passage of this bill through the committee.

As MIBFN Executive Director, Shannon McKenney Shubert, MPH, CLC, shared in her testimony to the committee, "If you care about health, and you care about people, then you care about increasing access to human milk for Michigan babies.”

Recordings of the Senate Health Policy Committee meeting on SB 351 with MIBFN testimony (starts at 30:30) and of the Senate Health Policy Committee's vote on SB 351 (starts at 12:56) are available now.

The next step for this legislation is a vote by the full Michigan Senate.

Michiganders, please call your senators!
• Find your Michigan Senator and make your calls
• Use these talking points or this script to request support for this legislation and send to your Senator in emails and follow up communications
Onward in solidarity!

The MIBFN Team

Counterfeit and fake car seats are a rapidly growing concern in child safety. Parents and gift givers are purchasing seats from online deal sites like eBay and AliExpress as well as 3rd party sellers on Amazon and Walmart, sometimes with high-end price tags. Even parents that do extensive research can be easily fooled by these unsafe look-a-likes and/or tricked into purchasing car seats that do not meet US regulations or safety standards.
Red Flags
Missing U.S. mandatory information on permanent labels:
• Minimum & maximum height and weight in English, model name and number, date of manufacturing
• Missing this statement on at least one label: “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards.”
• Foreign languages on the label that do not include English
• Did not come with a car seat manual and/or a registration recall card
• No 5-point harness with chest clip (will not have for booster car seats)
See the attached document "How to Determine That a Child Restraint System Can Be Used Legally in the U.S." from the Manufacturers Alliance for Child Passenger Safety for more information.
How to Verify
If you suspect your car seat has any of the red flags, there are a few additional ways to confirm the car seat is legal and safe for use in the US:
• Find the label with the car seat manufacturer’s name, address, and phone number and contact them about your seat directly
• Get the car seat inspected by certified Child Passenger Safety Technician
• Verify the car seat is on the American Academy of Pediatrics 2023 Car Seat Product List
Return and Report
If you receive an unsafe car seat let the retailer know and return it. If the return does not require the car seat to be sent back, discard the seat. DO NOT DONATE. You should also report any unsafe car seats to these governmental agencies:
• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - Tell NHTSA anytime you see an unsafe/defective/non-compliant car seat
• Consumer Product Safety Commission – Go to SaferProducts.gov or call toll-free (800) 638-2772 to report
For any additional questions, please contact a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician in your area.
