Thank you to Ashley Capital for hosting our most recent Legislative Coffee at Flint’s Oak Park, where we learned about their latest progress with the redevelopment of the former Buick City site. Building No. 1 at the Flint Commerce Center is now fully operational and occupied by Bunzl Distribution and Victory Packaging, and work is currently underway on Building No. 2. The site will be developed over several years and, when complete, will span 3.5 million square feet of distribution and light industrial space across 10 buildings.

With the reinvestment project, Ashley Capital is also investing nearly $500,000 to upgrade Oak Park (Flint's first public park) and ensure park maintenance over the next 20 years.

This is a great example showing how economic growth and community development can go hand in hand, and we appreciated the opportunity to share it with our Genesee County caucus!

Recognized in 2024 at just 31, Joel was serving as Planning & Advocacy Manager at Communities First, Inc., where he led impactful work in urban planning, civic engagement, and housing advocacy. From advancing voter education to helping push forward Flint’s first zoning code update in nearly 50 years, his work has empowered residents and strengthened neighborhoods across the city.

Today, Joel continues to find meaningful ways to serve Flint as Policy Director at Abundant Housing Michigan, a nonprofit he helped build, furthering his commitment to equitable development and accessible housing.

As the 40 Under 40 season fills the atmosphere, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to spotlight past honorees who continue to shape Flint & Genesee, and DeAndra Larkin is a standout example.

At just 36, she was recognized on September 12, 2022, for her work as Chief of Staff at Mott Community College, where she has helped lead strategic efforts to improve student success outcomes and close equity gaps across the institution.

Since receiving this honor, DeAndra has transitioned into her role as CEO of the YWCA of Greater Flint, continuing her commitment to advocacy, empowerment, and community impact. Her leadership journey reflects a consistent dedication to creating opportunity and advancing equity across Flint & Genesee.

We join our community in honoring the life and legacy of former U.S. Sen. Donald W. Riegle, Jr. As a Flint native, he helped shape our region, state, and beyond through his leadership and advocacy. Our thoughts are with the Riegle family as we reflect on his lasting impact.

Former U.S. Sen. Donald W. Riegle, a Flint native who served under seven presidents in Congress, has died of cardiac arrest, his family told MLive-The Flint Journal.
