We've been adding to childhood for decades — more structure, more supervision, more intervention. Researcher and psychologist Peter Gray asks what we've been subtracting.

His new book, "Restoring Childhood: How to Set Kids Free in the Age of Anxiety", traces how we got here, what it's costing kids, and what it might take to change course.

At RLC, we're not waiting for the culture to catch up. Our teens have agency over their days, their learning, and their community — because we believe that's not a radical experiment. It's just what kids actually need.

"Restoring Childhood" releases September 15. Pre-order link in comments.

Tyler came to RLC as a teen. Now an alum, he volunteers to run a weekly D&D campaign for the current crew — for the second year in a row. 🎲⚔️

He built storylines on the fly, voiced characters (Tyler is an aspiring voice actor, and it shows), and kept a table of players genuinely invested from session to session. What stood out most was how easily he brought in new players. Someone just checking it out, not sure if D&D was for them — Tyler rolled with it. That flexibility isn't something you can fake.

It means something when an alum chooses to give their time back to RLC. We are deeply grateful. Thank you, Tyler.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads in our community — and to every dad out there figuring out how to support a kid who needs something a little different.
It's not always a straight line. Being in their corner is everything. 🧡

This year, teens in Amy Barrett's Characters, Creatures, and Worlds class built fantastical worlds, invented creatures, and developed characters entirely on their own terms. Amy just wrapped up five years of volunteer teaching at RLC. Her care and patience gives teenagers real permission to take their own ideas seriously — and they ran with it all year.

Amy also "brought her apron" twice as a guest teacher for Cooking class — latkes and focaccia, from scratch — because she has more to give.

Amy's dedication to our teens is something we don't take for granted. Thank you, Amy. 🧡

Nine months ago, the guitarist had never played guitar.

House Band closed out June Exhibitions with "12:51" by The Strokes — and it sounded exactly like what it is: teens who picked up instruments, kept showing up, and figured out how to make something together.

Two friends. Very different. Both found something at RLC that was theirs to keep.

One brought the energy — the jokes, the enthusiasm, the conversations that always ended in a good laugh (and currently, a cast).

The other spent two years finding his voice. On the last day, he used it to say some of the most heartfelt words of the morning.

We're going to miss them both. The community they leave behind is better for having had them in it.
