Every teen wants to be understood. Most schools are designed around something else entirely.

This episode of The Independent Learner podcast is worth a listen β€” especially if you've ever felt like your kid was being managed rather than known.

It's also what we try to build every day at RLC.

What if your teen actually wanted to go to school?

Come see what that looks like. Join us for an Open House β€” Sat, June 13, 10am–noon. Tour our space, chat with our teacher-mentors, and learn how teens at RLC design an education around who they are and where they're headed. RSVP via link in comments.

To schedule a visit on another day, call 908-938-1464 or email [email protected].

What if school refusal isn't the problem, but rather a signal that something deeper needs to change?

This article by Katy Purviance of The Joy of Learning gives voice to what so many parents are feeling but afraid to say. Research shows 83% of teens name school as their primary source of anxiety. By 11th grade, student engagement falls from 74% in 5th grade to just 32%. And yet we're told to push through, supplement at home, and "trust the process." What if the system is the problem, not our children?

If this resonates and you're thinking about options for next year, Raritan Learning Cooperative might be worth a conversation. We combine the best parts of school β€” peers, classes, and mentors β€” with the freedom to learn in a way that actually fits your teen. We have openings for Fall 2026. Reach out anytime.

🌟 Alumni Spotlight: Jamie 🌟

RLC alum Jamie is currently a junior at Montclair State University, double majoring in Theatre Studies and Family Science/Human Development, with plans to graduate in Spring 2027. Jamie has been making waves in the theatre world recently, working as a dramaturg on several university productions and completing a dramaturgy internship at The New Jersey Play Lab, where they gained hands-on experience in new play development. Jamie is planning to pursue a Master's degree in Child Life, blending their love of theatre with their dedication to children's well-being.

When not immersed in theatrical research, Jamie finds time to give back to the RLC community by volunteering as a math tutor, helping current students navigate their learning journeys with patience and expertise.

Jamie's unique blend of artistic and scientific interests shows how RLC's self-directed learning approach allows students to pursue multiple passions that complement each other in unexpected ways. From the theatre stage to the classroom, Jamie embodies the RLC spirit of curiosity, creativity, and community service. 🧑

Sometimes the best learning happens outside the classroom walls - like experiencing the newly-reopened Princeton University Art Museum from a different perspective. Watch as we navigate accessibility together, from the ADA-compliant Princeton Loop buses to wheelchair-friendly pathways, showing what it's like getting around town in a wheelchair. Every journey brings new understanding when we experience things as a community!
