What a great presentation, Birding by Ear, by Laura Kroon Bush, Principal Park Naturalist at Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation! We learned that birds use their calls
to attract a mate, define their territory, and communicate a threat. The calls are not the same as their songs. Thank you Laura!

Hunterdon Care Center was one of the places that received our gifts for Valentine's Day. Who can't use a new pair of socks? Yes, those are socks disguised as flower pots.

The Guild will be making Valentine favors on February 4th, Thursday night, 7 pm at the parish hall of the Flemington Presbyterian Church. Come by and take a peek!

A big thank you to Amanda Crooke of Locust Light Farm who spoke about Meadow Medicine at our January meeting. We sampled 7 teas from native plants such as Monarda. Depending on the plant, the tea is used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral and carminative (that last one was a new word for moi...it means relieving flatulence).

Wouldn't you rather be talking about meadows rather than icy driveways? If so, please come learn about Backyard Meadows and also enjoy an herbal tea sampler at our next meeting:

Thursday, January 8th at 7 pm in the parish house of the Presbyterian Church of Flemington.

We learned so much from Pete Kinsella at our November meeting.

The Clivia came to England from South Africa where it is called a bush lily because it is an understory plant. In the winter the Clivia likes a dark basement and in February or March it can return to sunlight. If started from seed the plant will not bloom for 5 years. Be sure to pick a window with morning sun.

Hope to see you at our January meeting on Thursday, the 8th.

At HGG we don't just talk about what grows outside. Do you want to learn more about the lovely houseplant, Clivia? Then please come to the Guild Meeting on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 at the Flemington Presbyterian Church parish hall. All are welcome even if you think you have a "black" thumb! ๐Ÿชด๐Ÿชน๐ŸŽ‹

Chris Ondrak, Owner of The Gilded Lily in Flemington, created 4 beautiful flower
arrangements during our October meeting. We all learned so much, including the fact that if
hydrangea is poked in alum powder, it will last much longer!

Lou Ann, Guild member, gave a marvelous presentation about her collection of flower frogs!

A frog is a device to hold flowers in place in a vase or container. In the 1800s, the frogs were flower bowl/pots so that flowers could grow up through the holes. In 1875, a patent was
given for the first holder. In 1914, the first glass frog and in 1915, the first metal frog were made. The frogs were popular for about 10 years โ€“ from the 1920s through the 1930s. They are highly collectible today. LouAnn suggests using flower frogs to help the environment instead of using the green foam, Oasis.
