Hunterdon Speak Easy Toastmasters Club

Whether you're a current or former member, or you've always been curious about Toastmasters, please join us at the Hunterdon County Headquarters Library on March 23rd for our Spring Open House!

There will be refreshments, and networking starting at 6:30pm, so guests can get to know members and learn more about the Club.

Our featured speaker is District 83 Director Pamela Johnson! She will present a speech entitled "When Your Brain Leaves the Building" about getting creative with public speaking.

Last night, Warren County Toastmasters hosted the Area 44 International Speech and Tall Tales competition!

The two First Place winners from our Club competition placed Second in the Area competition. Susan Matson, in International Speech, and Kent Amarante, in Tall Tales. Congratulations to both of you!

As I was putting the finishing touches on our newsletter for the last quarter, I came across this photo of Thaine and Susan from the White Elephant gift exchange after our last meeting.

It was a reminder that Toastmasters is about so many things: writing, practicing, and delivering speeches; giving and receiving feedback; taking on a role for the first time; mentoring; leading. But it's also a community of unparalleled support, encouragement, and yes, lots of fun and laughs as well!

We've had some exciting happenings these past couple months--a fun night out at a local brewery, our bi-annual open house, and winning a Smedley award! The Smedley is for at least 5 new or re-instated members from August 1-September 30. We had 5 new members and 1 re-instated member during that time!

Join us this Thursday night for a casual get-together at the Readington Brewery. Elizabeth will be there a little early to reserve a picnic table. Drop by for an hour, or stay until closing. Hope to see you there! Members and guests are welcome.

Yesterday at the Raritan Township Community Day was a success! People stopped by for more information, and left not only with brochures, but an invitation to TWO upcoming events.

Lisa, who accepted the invitation to host a Toastmasters tent months ago, will speak at an upcoming meeting about her experience for a Level 4 project. Faith, Kristine and Elizabeth joined her as representatives as well. A fun day all around!

Seven of our Club members, plus two daughters, one son-in-law, and three puppies! met up recently at Spruce Run near Clinton, NJ for a short hike around the lake. It was a beautiful day to be out and about!

Club members Cassie DeCandia and Susan Matson attended the Toastmasters International Convention this weekend in Philadelphia, PA. Here are just a few photos from the busy weekend.

Susan and Cassie posed with the second-place winner of the 2025 World Championship of Public Speaking®, Mas Mahatir Bin Mohamad, who delivered an inspiring speech entitled "Raindrops." They are also pictured in front of the Vision board featuring speaking and leadership goals of attendees. Thank you for representing us!

Our Club recently honored Cassie DeCandia, the President of Hunterdon Speak Easy for the 2024-2025 year. Under her leadership, our club obtained the designation of "President's Distinguished Club." Thank you, Cassie, for your hard work, dedication, and always inspiring words!

Cassie was presented with a special plaque by Laura Newton (VP of Education for 2024-2025 and current Treasurer).

Longtime Toastmaster Ted Mertyris recently completed a significant portion of an advanced project on his chosen Innovative Planning Pathway.

This Level 5, High Performance Leadership project, had Ted organizing a special "Pitch Night" Speakathon, where members had the opportunity to present their own inventions/ideas. Ted organized additional volunteer members into a Board responsible for asking questions of the speakers, with the goal of choosing one stand-out idea to potentially launch at a later time.

Congratulations, Ted, for running this successful Speakathon. And congratulations to all the speakers (Sally, Kent, Monique, Ted, Victoria, and Lisa) for their thoughtful and well-executed speeches!
