Nonprofit & Group Highlight – October 17 Veterans & Community Fall Festival

Today we are highlighting the Franklin Sousley Foundation, one of the organizations participating in our October 17 event.

Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photograph of six Marines raising the American flag atop Iwo Jima became one of the most recognizable images of World War II. It came to symbolize the courage and sacrifice of America’s fighting men and was later used as the centerpiece of the 7th War Bond Drive, which raised nearly $30 billion for the war effort.

That famous image also has a strong Kentucky connection. Fleming County native Franklin Sousley stands at the center of the photograph.
With that legacy in mind, a group of passionate local citizens came together to form the Franklin Sousley Foundation with the goal of keeping his story, and the story of the Marines who fought alongside him, alive for future generations.

The Foundation works to promote civic education, military history and heritage, preserve and improve sites connected to Franklin Sousley, encourage local tourism, and help educate and inspire Fleming County youth to become future citizens and leaders.

We are proud to have the Franklin Sousley Foundation participating in the 1st Annual Veterans & Community Fall Festival on October 17.

Nonprofit & Community Group Highlight: Meet the organizations participating in our October 17 Veterans & Community Fall Festival.

We at the Franklin Sousley VFW POST 1834 wanted to share some information about Warrior Ridge and pass it along to our members and other Veterans who may benefit from what they do.

Warrior Ridge is a nonprofit organization focused on reconnecting combat veterans with the people who understand them best — each other.

Their mission is to help rebuild the camaraderie, trust, and support system many veterans lose after leaving the military. Through retreats, outdoor activities, and time spent together, we give combat veterans a place to step away from everyday stress and reconnect with fellow warriors who have shared similar experiences.

At Warrior Ridge, there are no ranks, no judgment, and no pressure. It is simply warriors spending time with warriors — talking, laughing, sharing experiences, and rebuilding the bonds that can make a real difference in someone’s life.

A major part of their mission is helping combat veteran su***de prevention by making sure veterans know they do not have to face their struggles alone.

To learn more about Warrior Ridge, our retreats, volunteer opportunities, or ways to support our mission, please visit:

warriorridge.org

We are honored to share Warrior Ridge with our members, local veterans, and anyone who may know a combat veteran who could benefit from reconnecting with other warriors.

Thank you for supporting our veteran community and helping us reach more warriors.

Honoring America’s elite Warriors by providing the opportunity to reconnect and reestablish their Warrior Family

Picking on the Porch

A little more information about Picking on the Porch at the Veterans & Community Fall Festival Oct 17th.

Picking on the Porch is for anyone who enjoys making music, whether you’re just getting started, play as a hobby, or are looking for a chance to share a few songs with the community.

We are planning on roughly 30 minutes per person, depending on how many people sign up.

The idea is simple: less of a formal concert and more like passing the guitar around the firepit, sharing some music, and enjoying the evening together.

Picking on the Porch begins around 4 PM.

If you would like to sign up, just reach out to us through Facebook and we’ll get you added to the list.
