About the Fleetwood Area Historical Society...
The Fleetwood Historical society was established in 1991 as a non-profit organization by a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the rich historic heritage of the Fleetwood area. After many hours of volunteer labor, former schoolrooms were transformed into a museum, an office and a meeting room. Since then, almost 8,000 artifacts have been

received, cataloged and displayed or stored in our museum. Cataloging allows us to search the computer to locate a named person, group, event or article, to learn whether or not we have anything about the item for which we searched. In addition to operating the museum, Society volunteers handle correspondence and memberships, arrange special programs and speakers, do photography and printing, make presentations to schools and community groups, and scout flea markets and public sales for pertinent artifacts. The Society's motto, "Preserving the Past for the Future," speaks for our intent. The Museum is a place for older persons to reminisce and a source for you people and visitors to learn about the varied history of the Fleetwood area. Carl Herman was the original President, and Mr. Dennis Becker was a long-time president. Becker died on August 14, 2011, and the current president is William Strause.

This photo, from the Fleetwood Area Historical Society files, came from a 35 mm slide from Mrs. Walters’ kindergarten collection. I am sure some students can be identified.
Note the glass windows as discussed in other posts about Fleetwood School District buildings of this period.

Cutting ice on the mill pond near the railroad. The pond, on Willow Creek is long gone. The water powered the mill at 154 W. Main Street.
Ice was stored nearby and was probably used to make ice cream at Kelchner’s.

The Fleetwood Area Historical Society has agreed to sponsor the SGV touring car at the Boyertown Museum of Historical Vehicles.
The body of this auto was fabricated in the shops of the Fleetwood Metal Body Company in about 1911. The frame was built in Reading by the Sternburg -Graham -VanTyme Company.
The BMHV transported this auto to the dedication on our PA historical marker. We are proud to adopt this piece of Fleetwood’s heritage.

The Fleetwood Historical Society will meet on Wednesday December 18 at 7 PM in their meeting room in the Fleetwood Community Center.
The original program was focused on Roadside America but we will also review slides of memorable December meetings (our fun month) including visits to Jim Herbeins layout and the Reading Railroad Heritage Center in Hamburg. We had their pilot, and only?, night-time lantern tour of the rail yard.
We will also include Lester Hoch’s model village and recent museum discoveries.
This will also be a reminder of members no longer with us. A potpourri of memories.

The Fleetwood Area Historical Society’s November meeting will be Nov. 20 at 6:00 PM at Keystone Villa of Fleetwood. The program will be about the history of Blandon. Several Villa residents are from Blandon and provided insight to the program.
