Downriver Genealogical Society

Downriver Genealogical Society Serving Southeastern Wayne County, Michigan Allen Park, Brownstown, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Gr The Downriver Genealogical Society became a reality.

In the fall of 1979, an eight-session genealogy workshop was held. The persons attending the workshop desired to keep the initiative alive and met for the first time in January 1980 with fourteen people in attendance. Within 10 short years our Society hosted the statewide Michigan Genealogical Council 3 day Seminar.

Our next DRGS General Meeting and potluck will be this Wednesday June 17th at the Copeland Center in Wyandotte. Doors will open at 5:30 and we will eat at 6pm. Please remember to bring your dish to pass.
Our speaker will be Christopher Chris Gillerist and he will give his presentation on The Piracy on the Great Lakes. He will do a historical dive into the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries on the Atlantic Ocean and how the concept of illegal activity evolved over time into the 19th and 20th centuries and how it played out on the Great Lakes. Join noted historian Christoper Gillerist, Director Emeritus of the National Museum of the Great Lakes as he explores the ins and outs of illegal activity on the water including the Great Lakes most famous pirate Dan Seavy.

Our speaker will be Derek Blount and his speech will be on Connecting the Points on your Family Map. He will review modes of transportation and routes across the nation and time, and how to apply it to your map. This is a basic "How did my ancestors get here from there?"

Our next DRGS General Meeting will be this Wednesday October 15, 2025 at 7pm at the Copeland Center in Wyandotte. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
Our speaker will be John Hartig – Rouge River Revived – How people are bringing their river back to life. This program describes the river’s history from pre-European times into the 21st century. His book covers topics such as Native American life on the Rouge, Indigenous flora and fauna over time, the river’s role in the founding of local cities; its key involvement in Detroit’s urban development and intensive industrialization; and the dramatic clean-up arising from citizen concern and activism.
