The black communities in the mountains of NC fought to give their children a quality education. They understood to be truly free, they needed to have a good education. When integration came, it brought the black community better facilities, but it came at a high price. Cherokee Historical Association is saddened by the passing of Unto These Hills alumnus Lloyd Arneach Sr.
Mr. Arneach first joined the cast of Unto These Hills as a child from 1958 to 1961, playing several roles including Tsali's son. He rejoined the cast in the early 2000s and played Tsali during the 2008 season. We were grateful that Mr. Arneach was able to join us for our 75th Anniversary festivities last summer and share some of his stories with us.
An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Mr. Arneach was also a nationally recognized storyteller, cultural expert, and published author. You can read more about Mr. Arneach's many accomplishments and contributions at https://tinyurl.com/4nkdr2zc
Mr. Arneach will be greatly missed by the Cherokee community a a whole. Our hearts and our prayers are with his family during this difficult time
