The Grand Canyon is a place we deeply love, which makes the recent flooding in Bright Angel Canyon especially difficult to see.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones, and we continue to pray for those who remain missing. We are also praying for the rangers, first responders, pilots, river guides, and others involved in search, recovery, and response efforts throughout the canyon.

For those who have reached out with questions about Canyon Ministries, we also want to offer some reassurance.

The flooding was concentrated primarily along Bright Angel Creek, the North Kaibab Trail corridor, and the Phantom Ranch area in the inner canyon. This is the drainage that begins below the North Rim and follows Bright Angel Creek toward the Colorado River. Phantom Ranch and the North Kaibab Trail are currently closed as a result of the damage.

This is not the same area where Canyon Ministries operates our regular Daily Tours along the South Rim.

Grand Canyon National Park remains open for day use on the South Rim, and our Canyon Ministries Daily Tours continue to operate. Because the flood also damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, the Park Service has implemented significant water restrictions and temporarily suspended overnight hotel accommodations inside the park. Those restrictions affect lodging and water use, but South Rim day visitation remains open.

We currently have no Canyon Ministries groups on the Colorado River. We completed our final river trip of the 2026 season last week. We are grateful for that timing, but we ask you to keep the many river companies, guides, crews, and guests still in the canyon in prayer as they deal with debris and changing conditions resulting from the flooding.

Please also join us in praying for the families who are grieving, for those still waiting for news, and for everyone working through the difficult days ahead. Our Canyon Ministries team is safe, our South Rim tours remain in operation, and we will continue to monitor conditions throughout Grand Canyon National Park.

Stand at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on a cool morning and the landscape below can look almost lifeless. The cliffs are dry, the slopes are steep, and the river is barely visible as a narrow thread winding through rock nearly a mile below. From that distance, the canyon seems like a monument made almost entirely of stone.

Then you begin to descend, and the air grows warmer as the forest gradually thins. Ponderosa pines give way to pinyon and juniper, then to desert shrubs, cactus, agave, and open slopes of sun-baked rock. Far below, cottonwoods and willows gather along the Colorado River and its tributaries, while shaded side canyons shelter ferns, mosses, flowers, insects, and amphibians in places that seem worlds apart from the dry cliffs just beyond them.

The Grand Canyon is not one habitat. It is many.
