Good morning. It is Tip on Tuesday and today the subject is milk.
Interestingly enough the higher the fat content the longer the milk lasts.
So like eggs are good 30 days past best by date so is full fat milk.
Please remember milk needs to be kept cold for longevity. All milk should never be put in the door or near the front, in order for it to stay viable. 2% milk is good 21 days past best by, 1% is 14 days and skim or non fat an additional 7 days.
If you have a side by side refrigerator with the freezer next to it, put the milk next to the freezer wall in the refrigerator.

As The Pantry serves our members for one last month it seems a good time to remind folks about the longevity of food.
Food is very expensive and throwing out perfectly good food is a financial error.
To start with, the stamp on your can or box of processed food is NOT an expiration date.
Our brave men and women in Vietnam ate WW 2 canned food. That food didn't kill our service people. So be aware a canned green bean left unopened for 4 or 5 years will change texture. It will not make you sick or kill you. Of course you should rotate you processed food to retain the texture but if one is a little long in tooth, it's ok.
There is no X or Expires date on any food product except baby formula. Do not store your processed food where it can get wet or extremely hot as that will shorten the life span of the food.
Now about eggs. The date on the container is a sale by date. Eggs are good 30 days past that date. If the date is June 6th you can be sure they are good until July 6th. Again keeping them cool is a good idea.

Good morning pantry followers. It is with immense sadness that I have to inform you that ThePantry is closing for good.
WED thru SAT3 to 6
this month the pantry will be open for members. No Sunday's this month. No new memberships will be issued. If you are a member and have lost your card we will be happy to give you another card. So members can shop every 7 days as before. If you were a Sunday shopper pick any other day to come every 7 days. Final day will be 6/28/2024.
The cost of operating and decreased donations has created this situation. As most of you know all help is volunteer,so costs are rent, utilities, and food.
We have served over 20 thousand people every year since 2018. The need grows but the monetary donations and food donations have not kept pace.
To those who have donated over the years we thank you for joining us in this mission to support our friends neighbors and distant relatives. As we move forward please be guided by the GOLDEN RULE.

Tips on Tuesday:
Let's talk about dry warm climate and fresh produce.
Melons and citrus can be stored in cool dry places. So can potatoes, turnips and parsnips. However corn lasts best if unshucked in the fridge. If shucked put in plastic bag to retain moisture. Carrots,bell peppers, and celery need to be in a fridge wrapped in a plastic bag. If you have bell peppers or Eggplant that is starting to wrinkle put them in a bowl of water overnight.
You too need hydration and don't forget the sunscreen on these cloudy/sunny days.
