When you need us, we show up. But showing up is only part of the job.

Your firefighters do far more than fight fires. We’re firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and rescuers. But just as importantly, we’re members of this community, too. We live here, raise our families here, and care about Flagstaff’s future.

You may have noticed the secret is out about how wonderful Flagstaff is. Our community has grown, but our emergency services haven’t kept pace.

Over the past 25 years, our call volume has nearly doubled, our population has increased, and the demands on first responders continue to rise. Yet our staffing and resources haven’t grown proportionately.

We’ve adapted, stretched our resources, and found ways to do more with less. But doing more with less cannot be our long-term public safety plan.

That’s why United Flagstaff Firefighters Local 1505 is asking you to Vote YES on Props 404 and 405.

These propositions are about ensuring we have the personnel, equipment, and resources necessary to protect our growing community when you need us most.

We will continue showing up for you. We’re asking you to show up for us this November.

This is the Palisades Fire. And Flagstaff is not immune to a catastrophic fire like this.

We are surrounded by considerably more wildland vegetation than the Pacific Palisades was and we have less available immediate resources to come help us than they did.

The question isn’t whether wildfire is part of life in northern Arizona. It is how prepared we can be for it. We cannot wait until the next column of smoke is rising over Flagstaff to decide wildfire preparedness matters.

Proposition 404 would fund at minimum 27 additional wildland fire personnel. Proposition 405 would invest in the infrastructure to support them, including a Wildland Fire Management Facility.

That means more capacity not only to respond when fire comes, but to work throughout the year on wildfire mitigation, training, preparedness and protecting our community before the next ignition.

We encourage every Flagstaff voter to educate themselves about Propositions 404 & 405, ask questions, look at what the measures would fund, and make an informed decision this November.

AZ Daily sun asked the candidates about 404&405 this week. As a reminder, here’s who we’ve endorsed.

United Flagstaff Firefighters Local 1505 is proud to endorse Becky Daggett, Lori Matthews, and Nancy Baca in the upcoming City of Flagstaff election.

These endorsements weren’t given lightly. Through both their words and their actions, these candidates have earned the support of Flagstaff’s firefighters. They have consistently demonstrated their commitment to public safety, supported Propositions 404 & 405, and most importantly have shown a willingness to put the needs of our community ahead of personal or political motives.

You’ll notice one thing that isn’t part of our criteria: political party. We support candidates based on where they stand on issues; not the letter next to their name.

It’s right in our mission statement. Our professional firefighters aren’t just responsible for the safety residents of the city and its tourists, but the entire region as well.

Through statewide automatic aid and mutual aid agreements, your Flagstaff firefighters can be seen serving the community throughout the state.

Prop 404 will allocate further funding to staff fire units in the city that will continue to keep the region safe from catastrophic fire and other disasters. 404 also provides funding, through 7 dedicated call takers, to the Northern Arizona PSAP, which is responsible for dispatching 7 regional fire agencies.

Prop 405 secures funding to finalize the City’s new Wildfire Management facility and construct a new state of the art training facility, all for city firefighters and statewide partners to train to the highest level possible.

We’re asking you to vote YES on both propositions this fall to help elevate your public safety services in Northern Arizona.

Firefighter applications are open for the Greater Flagstaff Region, and your interview could make or break your opportunity to get hired.

The House of Jacks mentorship group is hosting their next Firefighter Interview Workshop this Sunday, October 4, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

They’ll cover interview fundamentals, answer structure, professional presence, the hiring process, agency knowledge, and give you the opportunity to sit down for realistic mock interviews with firefighters.

Summit Fire and Medical Dept. , Highlands Fire District , Pinewood Fire District , Flagstaff Fire Department , and Flagstaff Airport Fire are all hiring.

Whether your first interview is coming up or you want more practice, come put in the reps. Will you be there?

Flagstaff Fire Department Station 4’s Open House is tomorrow, October 2nd, from 1p.m.-3p.m.

Come say hi, meet their Flagstaff firefighters, tour the station, check out the trucks, ask questions about Propositions 404 & 405, and see what life at the firehouse looks like!

Station 4 is located at 4040 E. Butler Avenue. If you’re having trouble finding them, just look for the bafflingly large pumpkin in the yard.

Summit Fire and Medical Dept. is teaming up with Red Cross Arizona for a Sound the Alarm event on Saturday, October 17!

Crews and volunteers will be out in the Summit/Doney Park community installing FREE smoke alarms for residents who need them and sharing important home fire safety information. The Red Cross’s Sound the Alarm program provides qualifying homes with battery-powered smoke alarms at no cost.

Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. It’s a simple piece of equipment that can make a life-saving difference.

In Flagstaff, wildfire isn’t a hypothetical risk. We live, work, and recreate in the largest continuous ponderosa pine forests in the world—and protecting our community from wildfire takes work long before the first column of smoke rises.

Your wildland firefighters don’t just respond when a fire starts.

They spend the year reducing hazardous fuels, conducting prescribed burns, creating defensible space, preparing neighborhoods, training firefighters, maintaining equipment, and working alongside our regional, state, and federal partners.

Props 404 & 405 would invest in both the PEOPLE and the INFRASTRUCTURE behind that mission.

Prop 404 would provide additional public-safety staffing, including wildland fire management personnel-expanding our ability to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to wildfire.

Prop 405 would invest in public-safety infrastructure and equipment, including construction of a dedicated Wildland Fire Management Facility to support the people responsible for protecting our community from wildfire.

Wildfire preparedness doesn’t begin when the tones drop. It happens year-round in the forest, in our neighborhoods, on the training ground, and behind the scenes. That way, when the next wildfire threatens Flagstaff, we’re ready.

“Truth does not mind being questioned. A lie does not like being challenged.”

As the debate over Props 404/405 continues, we encourage you to ask questions.

Ask us about staffing. Challenge the call-volume numbers. Ask why additional personnel, facilities, apparatus and technology are being requested. Ask exactly where the money would go.

But apply that same scrutiny to every claim you hear—including claims about surveillance, immigration enforcement and unchecked government power. Serious claims deserve evidence.

First responders aren’t professional politicians. They’re firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers, police officers, emergency management personnel and airport firefighters whose job is to solve problems and protect this community.

Don’t simply accept anyone’s narrative—including ours.

Read the measures. Look at the numbers. Question the claims. Follow the evidence. Then make your decision.

Flagstaff. Is. Growing.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has had the privilege of calling Flagstaff home.

In the last 25 years, Flagstaff’s population has increased by 50% to nearly 80,000 residents. On any given day, that number can climb as high as 150,000 when you account for NAU, surrounding county residents, commuters, and visitors.

Unfortunately, our public safety resources have not kept pace with that growth.

In 2008, your Flagstaff Firefighters responded to 9,894 calls for service. This year, that number is on track to exceed 19,000.

During that same period, daily minimum firefighter staffing increased by one.

Nearly twice as many calls for service. One additional firefighter.

We don’t use the words “staffing crisis” lightly. But this is unsustainable.

This November, Flagstaff voters will decide on two measures that would significantly change the resources available for public safety.

Proposition 404 would fund 77 additional public safety personnel, including all-risk firefighters and paramedics to staff an additional engine, ladder truck, and battalion chief.

Proposition 405 would fund critical public safety infrastructure, including a new Fire Station 7 in an area of the city anticipating more than 2,000 additional residences and businesses as Flagstaff continues to grow.

We’re asking for your support and a YES vote on Propositions 404 & 405 this election season.
