The Phoenix/ Flagstaff Industrial Workers of the World mourns the killing of Alex Pretti, a healthcare worker and member of our broader working-class community, who lost his life during a federal law-enforcement action in Minneapolis.
Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse, someone whose daily labor was devoted to keeping others alive. That a worker whose profession is care and protection was killed during a federal operation is both devastating and unacceptable. We extend our deepest solidarity to Alex’s family, loved ones, coworkers, and community.
As workers, we recognize a painful and consistent truth: state violence is most often turned against working people, especially those who speak up, bear witness, or step in to protect others.
The IWW stands firmly against the militarization of law enforcement, the expansion of federal policing powers into civilian life, and the normalization of lethal force against the working class. No worker should fear death for observing, recording, or intervening in defense of another human being.
We call for:
A full, independent investigation into Alex Pretti’s killing
Immediate public release and preservation of all video and physical evidence
Accountability for those responsible
An end to federal enforcement practices that endanger workers and communities
An injury to one is an injury to all.
We will continue to organize, educate, and stand in solidarity with workers everywhere who face violence, whether on the job, in their communities, or at the hands of the state.
