Small Farmers' Alliance

Small Farmers' Alliance In talking with several farmers in the Southern Wisconsin/Northern
Illinois area, it seems a movement towards small scale farming is
developing.

Our group is designed to help small scale farmers get the most out of their land through networking, educational workshops, farm tours, and farmer to farmer mentoring opportunities. That is farming on 10 acres of land or less. While most
farmers start small, there is an increasing number who are choosing to
stay small. Being sustainable, and especially profitable, on less
land is a challenge, but

it can be done. There are many wonderful
examples out there already of farmers who have learned, through trial
and error, how to make it work. There is a different philosophy to farming on less acreage. One
cannot increase efficiencies through mechanization, mostly because
tractors require greater spacing needs. Also crops are more intensely
grown which increases the need for a strong understanding of soil
management and fertility. Smaller scale farming usually means the
farmer has less support staff and must rely on their own skills and
hard work. Because of these reasons farmers need to learn to work
smarter and not harder. This group is designed to help those farmers
get the most out of their land through networking, educational
workshops, farm tours, and farmer to farmer mentoring opportunities.
