Sturbridge Storm 12U began summer tournament play this weekend at the Mike Murphy Tournament in Greenfield. 12U Storm’s record after pool play was 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie.
On Friday night, the team started strong by defeating the Franklin County Crush 10-3. Avery L. pitched the opener and shut down the Crush. The starter went 5.0 innings, allowing 3-runs on only 1-hit. She allowed 6-walks and struck out 10 batters. 12U Storm had 9 hits in the game, two each by Sofie L., Maddie C., Caroline P., Courtney C., and one by Avery. For her strong pitching performance and hit, the Crush awarded the game MVP medal to Avery.
On Saturday, the team faced off against the Somerset Berkley Wildcats. Sofie L. started in the circle for the Storm and pitched two scoreless innings. Sofie started the third, but after a few bunt plays and an injury to her pitching hand, Sofie left the game and Avery L. came in the game in relief. Sofie ended up being charged with 3-runs, on 2-hits, with 2-walks, and 1-strike out. Avery finished the game in the circle, going 4-innings, giving up 0-runs, on 2-hits, allowing 3-walks, and striking out 3. In a tight pitchers duel all game, the hits were tough to come by for both teams. Storm’s two hits were recorded by Sofie L. and Avery L. As the time expired in the sixth inning, Storm threatened but couldn’t get Maddie home from third base and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Wildcats coaching staff awarded the game MVP to Sofie L. for her strong start on the mound and her hit.
Immediately following the Wildcats draw, 12U Storm faced a very tough Connecticut Tides team. Maddie C. started pitching for the Storm and while the team looked amazing defensively up until that point, a lack of focus and communication hurt the Storm in the first inning. Maddie pitched very well despite the miscues on defense behind her. The starter pitched 3.2 innings and allowed 7-runs (5-earned) on 7-hits, walking 6, and striking out 6.
The CT Tides were by far the toughest opponents 12U Storm had yet faced, with strong bats up and down their lineup. Caroline P. came into the game in relief to close it out for the Storm, giving up 0-runs, 0-hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. The Storm only accumulated 3-hits in the game, one each by Sofie L., Maddie C., and Avery L. In the end, the Storm fell by the score of 7-3. The Tides gave the game MVP to starting pitcher Maddie C. for an incredible effort on the mound and her hit.
The Storm will face off against the Somerset Berkley Wildcats tomorrow in the Semifinals at 10:45.
