Unfortunately kitten season is here and they are being given away for free left and right as we speak. Just a reminder, kittens should stay with their moms for a bare minimum of 8 weeks. Many experts say 12 week minimum. Just because they stuck their nose in a food bowl and sampled some kibble does not mean it’s time to shove them out the door. They are often still nursing quite a bit at 8 weeks.

Taking care of kittens is a lot of work and we get that you may be beyond ready to thin the herd at your house but taking them away from their mothers too early can cause a lot of physical and emotional issues as well as malnutrition and even death.

If you are unwilling to care for mom and kittens until they are 8 weeks or older then that is even more of a reason to fix your cat! Pet overpopulation and euthanasia alone should be motivation enough. If you allow your cat to have babies you don’t intend to keep, then be responsible enough and do right by them and don’t give them away before they are physically ready- then fix your cat. There are low cost spay-neuter options available.

CCHC’s famous kitties!

This month's community cat calendar models are the almost cartoonish Bonnie and Clyde.

Their caretaker, Lynn, tells us "Bonnie and Clyde are inseparable. They eat and sleep together. When Bonnie was at the vet recently to have some teeth extracted, Clyde was not the same without her. They are so happy together!"

Want to see more community cats living their best, cover-worthy lives? Consider donating to our community cat program, helping provide spay/neuter, vaccines, and preventatives to Indianapolis area community cats.

Caretaker Peggy and neighbor Jenny recently enlisted our help to catch a bonded mama and daddy and their 5 offspring. Helping community cats is always easier when you work as a team! Neighbors met, Peggy set and monitored traps, and volunteers Carol, Michele and Gretchen all helped with various aspects of transport and recovery.

✅ Mom and dad cat successfully neutered and vaccinated 😺
✅ Five kittens handed over to Humane Society for Hamilton County (Indiana)💕
✅ No more kittens born outside in this neighborhood 👏

Here’s why cats should only ever wear breakaway collars. Even inside cats, which can, and do, get outside sometimes despite owners best efforts (anybody in neighborhood chat groups knows this to be true). Volunteer Amanda was able to trap this boy, estimated to be 7 years old, and aptly named The Dark Knight. We think he may have gotten a front leg through his collar and it was like that long enough to create deep wounds. It’s been so long that he now no longer trusts people. But things are looking up for DK! He was neutered, his wounds clipped and cleaned and given a long acting antibiotic at the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic. We held him as long as he would tolerate captivity and sent him back to his comfort zone to continue to heal.

Every kitten you see comes from a mother, whether she’s nearby or hidden, friendly or fearful. Her story doesn’t end just because her kittens are found. She’s still out there, still struggling, still at risk of bringing more litters into a hard life.

We aren’t asking you to take her in, but she does need help in the way that matters most: being spayed. ❤️ That small act of effort, of simply caring enough to intervene, can change everything for her.

Because this is about more than just one litter. Saving a kitten is meaningful, but leaving the mother behind means the cycle continues, more kittens, more suffering, more lives at risk.
